The Journey

The Journey by Laurie Buchanan

The Journey by Laurie Buchanan

We are getting ready to take a journey; one that’s been planned for over a year. Am I excited? Certainly. But in a way, I’m saddened too. You see for me, the anticipation—the journey—is equally important, if not more so, than the destination.

This is just as true about how I view life and its events: births, marriage, moving, anniversaries, promotions, publication, graduations, retirement and even death. It is purposeful living—being present in each moment leading up to the destination—that is essential.

Listen with your heart,

Laurie Buchanan

Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.

  1. Laurie, you are a well-seasoned traveler, this journey is one that should gladden your hearts because it is a Celebration of 30 years of Commitment to each other. Just go enjoy to the fullest and leave all the philosophies at home to take care of themselves. Your mission is to play! Sandi

  2. Laurie,
Each day I read your blogs, and go to your site to see more inspired writings.
Your whole life seems to be a wonderful journey of positive and joyful events.
Through your writing and friendship on Gaia I hope to learn to calm down and enjoy the journey as it unfolds instead of doing all the planning, guiding, pushing. Sometimes for me that is the fun part and the actual event pales to the anticipation.
So enjoy your journey, not only listen with your heart but see with it as well and be in the present moment.
    Enjoy the day,
    ~Jean

    • Jean – Thank you for your kind words. Please know that when I go on my weekly “Artist Date” yours is one of the websites I make a point of visiting for creative inspiration; you are part of the wind beneath my wings.

  3. Laurie, I invite you (as I know you will:) to savour the sauce with all its nuance flavours of your time away. I am reminded of a wonderful quote…

“A painting is never finished — it just stops in interesting places.” (Paul Gardner)

Your post conveys the same message about life and destinations.

May you have the most marvelous time away with Len – doing whatever your heart desires… though that groove is well established in your life – may some fresh petals open on your life-blossom as you travel.

  4. Oh Laurie, you are so very very right! To be present to the anticipation, as well as present to the actual warm ocean breezes and palm trees and pina coladas. (Do you drink pina coladas??) How very exciting that you are celebrating your 30th. Hope you have a wonderful wonderful time… 🙂

    • Kathy – I’m glad you stopped by, thank you. Eleuthera Island (actually, the Bahamas as a whole) is known for its rum. I’m sure Len will enjoy his share in pina coladas and otherwise. And while I’m not a teetotaler, I’m teaching Reiki Levels 1-3 for certification this year. And because I’m asking my students to be alcohol and caffeine free during their certification process, I’m doing it as well. That’s okay – I will live vicariously through Len.

      • I’ve done that for periods of time, as well. In fact, for 13 years I didn’t drink at all. How admirable that you are doing this to support your students. What a great gift you give them.

      • Kathy – Thirteen years? WOW! The reason I’m doing it is because I feel that a good teacher is willing and able to do everything they ask their students to do.

  5. Hi Laurie,

Wanted to thank you for stopping by my art blog and for leaving some beautiful comments there. 🙂

Have a wonderful time on your trip! I understand about the journey as I feel it is very important in everything we do each day. But it’s important to allow yourself to enjoy the destination as well…or so I feel. So enjoy yourself! 🙂

    • Itaya – Please know that we will, indeed, have a wonderful time at our destination (Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas). Internet connectivity willing, my intent is to post an island thought and photo every-other-day. Please stay tuned …
