LIFE PATH 3
The Path of the Entertainer

Self-expression is your keynote. The sparkle and effervescence you generate wherever you go bolsters the morale of anyone feeling a bit low. This, plus the fact that you’re very sociable and entertaining to be around, helps you to win friends quite easily. With the exception of the rare individual who doesn’t understand you, or perhaps feels envy, most people enjoy your company and treasure your friendship. You do realize that life isn’t all fun and games; and though you enjoy them as much as anyone, you see things clearly and don’t waste time or energy on the unreal or ridiculous.

Intelligence and a very keen mind are your two great assets—use them well. You quickly and easily learn anything that catches you fancy; but once the knowledge is stored, you go on to other things, rather than delve into it deeply. This versatility is the foundation of the many talents you possess, which make it problematic at times to decide just what it is you wish to express.  Enthusiasm reigns for a time, and you manage to transmit this excitement to others. Then suddenly your interest changes and you quickly go on to something else.

You’re used to, and enjoy, getting things your own way and doing exactly as you please. “What will be, will be” is your motto, and you don’t worry too much about tomorrow. This is fine as long as you don’t become so unconcerned that you neglect the things you should.

With your quick wit, the words you choose at times makes you seem a bit too critical of other people and their opinions. Take care, for you could unintentionally hurt those you love. Wit is an asset when used strictly in a humorous sense, and you’ve been endowed with a finely honed sense of humor that keeps you and yours cheerful.

Words—and your clever way of using them–stand you in good stead in any field where verbal communication is necessary. You’ll succeed in any of these areas without much effort on your part. Language and its use are like food for your soul. You thrive on intellectual pursuits and like to pass on what you’ve learned to others who are less knowledgeable. Music, dance, and the arts are very important to you.

Your greatest happiness is in loving and being loved. It’s an absolute necessity for you to be emotionally involved. Because of this great need for love, you’re apt to be a very good mate, always adoring, always ready to forgive, as long as your partner shows you the affection you crave. You mustn’t let this love become too overpowering or try to dominate the relationship because it could lead to the loss of all that you seek. Intimacy is extremely important to you and some of your relationships will be based on that alone.

Use your talents to bring joy wherever you go and in every relationship. Continually cultivate new associations and be cheerful, for this is your blueprint.

The Life Path 3 indicates that you entered this plane with a strong sense of creativity and wonderful communication skills. Achievement for you most likely comes through engaging your ingenious expression. A truly gifted 3 possesses the most exceptional innovative skills, normally in the verbal realm, writing, speaking, acting, or similar endeavors. Here we’re apt to find the entertainers of the world, bright, effervescent, sparkling people with optimistic attitudes. The bright side of this path stresses harmony, beauty, and pleasures; of sharing your inventive talents with the world. Capturing your capability in creative self-expression is the highest level of attainment for this life path.

Life Path 3’s generally live to the fullest, often without much worry about tomorrow. This can result in poor money management; you’re simply not concerned. You spend it when you have it, and sometimes even when you don’t.

The 3 loves connecting with people. The characteristics of the 3 are warmth and friendliness, a good conversationalist, social and open. A good talker both from the standpoint of being a delight to listen to, but even more importantly, one who has the ability to listen to others. Accordingly, the life path 3 produces people who are a welcome addition to any social situation and know how to make others feel at home. Your approach to life tends to be exceedingly positive. Your disposition is almost always sunny and openhearted. A happy and often inspired person, you’re constantly seeking and needing stimulation of similar people.

There is a remote side to your 3 Life Path, as well. This comes as a surprise to the native and to those who think they’re well acquainted. The 3 is actually a very sensitive soul. When hurt, you can easily retreat into a shell of morose silence for extended periods. Nonetheless, the 3 eventually copes with all of the many setbacks that occur in life and bounces back for more. It’s usually easy for you to deal with problems because you freely admit their existence without letting them get you down for too long. Because of your own sensitivity to hurt, you have a caring disposition and are usually conscious of other people’s feelings and emotions.

In romance, the 3 is an ardent and loyal lover. Relationships that don’t go well can leave scars that linger. Emotional experiences of all types tend to deeply touch the 3 with the associated drama taking some time to play out. Regrettably, the giving disposition of the 3 often attracts demanding partners. As with most of life’s issues for the 3 Life Path, balance in relationships can be elusive.

Your big test with a 3 Life Path is controlling your highs and lows. You won’t thrive in a routine environment or when you’re placed under dominating management. Slow thinking and overly contemplative people tend to frustrate you. You don’t function well with this type, whether you’re working for them or with them. Your exuberant nature will take you far, especially when you’re able to focus your energies and talents.

The Shadow Side
On the negative side, don’t allow intimate desires to negate your common sense or cause you to be promiscuous. Vanity and a tendency toward wasting yourself and your talents are also a danger, as is a lackadaisical “who cares” attitude.

For the few living on the negative side of this Life Path, a 3 may be so delighted with the joy of living they become frivolous and superficial. You may scatter your abilities and express little sense of purpose. The 3 can be an enigma, for no apparent reason you may become moody and tend to retreat. Escapist tendencies are not uncommon with the 3 life path, and you find it very hard to settle into one place or one position. Guard against being critical of others, impatient, intolerant, or overly optimistic.

Please note that certain 2’s, 4’s, and 6’s have a “Master Number” associated with their Life Path number; respectively 11, 22, and 33. In Numerology, this is the equivalent to a “special mission” they’ve been sent to fulfill. I’ll cover the Master Numbers at the end of the single-digits, 1-9.

LIFE PATH 2
The Path of the Cooperator

As the perfect companion, you’re the ideal mate, spouse, partner, friend, or employee. For this reason, it’s best to follow the well-trodden path and leave the trailblazing to others. You can profit by their mistakes and wisely make the necessary corrections as you go along.

Disharmony and unpleasant situations disturb you greatly, therefore you go out of your way to keep peace and to calm troubled waters. Your concern and consideration for others bring you a host of friends who you appreciate and treasure. Two outstanding traits that count heavily toward the attainment of anything you desire are your diplomacy and tact. You do things so gracefully that there’s never much of a problem in getting your own way.

The keynote of your success is cooperation—therefore, you’re most successful when completing the plans or executing the directives of others who are less capable of handling the organization and detail. It’s best not to attempt to originate ideas or businesses on your own.

Always agreeable, charming, and friendly, you impress people immediately. You draw out the silent and give solace to the troubled. As a result, you go through life with great grace. Calm and intelligent, you master any group or environment without friction. You need never lack for the finer things in life, even though you’re not aggressive.

Your great power of concentration and cooperation draw to you without much effort the rewards that others have to search for. This rhythm is vital to your contentment.

You have an unusual spirit of independence that makes you the perfect companion, yet completely self-sufficient if you need to be. You can easily and most satisfactorily take over the business responsibilities when left in charge, or those of the household when your partner is elsewhere. You prefer to act in concert with a partner, employer, or companion, where your duty is to carry out their directives. However, this same sense of cooperation and understanding also makes you quite efficient in whatever you undertake in a managerial capacity. Yet, in most cases, your successes lie in assisting rather than in directing. Should an idea in its raw state be presented to you, you’ll bring it to life and make it workable. This is a good quality to have since much of your life will be spent in the employ of others.

It’s in your nature to readily forgive and understand, which again, makes you the perfect companion. Should there be trouble within your marriage or partnership, chances are you’ll be the one to make sacrifices or compromises in order to overcome it. The great powers you have been endowed with allow you to forgive any transgression on the part of your mate or partner, but you must take care to avoid being so forgiving that transgressions become a habit on their part.

The Life Path 2 suggests that you entered this plane with a spiritual quality in your makeup allowing you to be one of the peacemakers in society. Your strengths come from an ability to listen and absorb. You’re a fixer, a mediator, and a very diplomatic type of person using persuasive skills rather than forcefulness to make your way in the world. When you embrace and exhibit the strength of your spiritual side, you’re intuitive, avant-garde, idealistic, and visionary. These extremes make you interesting with much to offer society. You have the potential to be a deep-thinker, and no doubt interested in understanding many of life’s mysteries and more intriguing facets.

If you’re living with the positive attributes of the number 2 Life Path, you’re apt to have the most delicate ability to be balanced and fair. You clearly see the full spectrum of viewpoints in any argument or situation. Because of this, people seek you out to be a mediator. In this role, you’re able to settle disputes with the most unbiased flair. There’s sincere concern for others; you think the best of people and want the best for them. You’re honest and open in thought, word, and deed. You excel in any form of group activity where your expertise in handling and blending people can be used effectively. Manners and tact mark your way with others, and you’re not one to dominate a group or situation. You’re the master of compromise and of maintaining harmony in your environment. As the ultimate team member, you never demand praise or recognition.

In many ways, you’re a creature of habit and routine—you like your path and pattern well worn and familiar. Your ability to analyze and render accurate judgments is a wonderful natural trait you bring to the business world. You strive for complete accuracy and even perfection in your work. Perhaps you’re not a leader, but you’re a visionary and a very talented idea person.

The Shadow Side
Negatively, in your effort to please you can too easily be influenced against your better judgment. You can also be moody and undecided, not to mention oversensitive. There are times when your uncertainty allows others to get the best of you, and this can make you resentful.

On the negative side, nervous energy is a trait often observed in the Life Path 2. Because of this, you may be seen as an extremist who’s sometimes the zealot in expressing likes and dislikes. Nervous tension can bring the normally easygoing 2 into a state of emotional outrage, which to those around you, may seem well out of character. Indeed, the 2 can sometimes become oversensitive. In some instances, the strength of the 2 can also become its weakness. At times you may find it hard to decide what to do. Twos often struggle against indecisiveness. Making decisions and getting your rear in gear—so to speak—may be a challenge. There’s a tendency for the many 2s to harbor feelings of uneasiness, and dissatisfaction with accomplishments and personal progress in life. The biggest obstacle and difficulty you may face is that of passivity and a state of apathy and lethargy. The negative 2 flirts with pessimism. When this sets in to any degree, you accomplish very little. If you’re living on the negative side of the 2, you may lack common sense, and you’re quite often unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality.

Even the more positive individuals with the 2 Life Path prefer a more amiable and less competitive environment, often shunning the business world. You can best serve society in endeavors utilizing your skills of counseling and guidance. Much of your idealism is people-oriented and quite humanitarian in nature. You expect a great deal of yourself.

Famous People with Life Path 2
Julie Andrews, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Bacon, Kim Basinger, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Tony Bennett, Orlando Bloom, Pierce Brosnan, Mariah Carey, Bill Clinton, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Cusack, Judi Dench, Robert Downey, Jr., Vince Gill, Woopi Goldberg, Al Gore, Woody Harrelson, Ashley Judd, Lisa Kudrow, Jessica Lange, Queen Latifah, Jay Leno, Susan Lucci, Madonna, Ann Margaret, Jane Pauley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Regis Philbin, Rene Russo, Meg Ryan, Paul Simon, and Wesley Snipes.

Life Path 2 Compatibility
The Life Path 2 person has a natural fit with Life Paths 2, 4, and 8. They get along well with Life Paths 3 and 6. They’re neutral with Life Path 9’s. But they find a challenge (or need to compromise) with Life Paths 1, 5, and 7.

LIFE PATH 1
The Path of the Leader

As in everything, number 1 denotes the first. Your strong sense of individuality and positive nature assure you of leadership in all your endeavors. You can never be relegated to a position of subservience. Determination is the strength of your ambition, and it manifests itself in an authoritative manner that shows your skill and experience. Your originality, creativeness, and aggressiveness breathe life into your ideas and build them into productive form. You’re blessed with executive ability and can manage the organization of any business, group, or household with great ease and success.

You’re at your best when you start any project from its conception and learn by your mistakes. You stand on your own feet no matter how difficult a situation may be, whether in business or of a personal nature. You always make your own decisions and stand by them in spite of advisers who aren’t in agreement. Developing new concepts and methods comes easily to you, you would do well to capitalize on this talent. Extend yourself in all fields of interest because success is yours, no matter what area you delve into.

Unless it’s sensible or practical to do so, you’ll never walk the common paths, but search out new, more exciting ones, which will generally prove fruitful. There’s no need to repeat yourself. You can take the lead in anything and therefore new ideas are necessary.

Select your own assistants carefully for any project. It’s necessary to choose those that can do as you direct, inasmuch as your methods are bound to be revolutionary and require strict adherence to your instructions. Don’t allow anyone to put you off, change your mind, or interfere in your affairs, as your way is generally best.

Accept all responsibility without concern because you have the power to overcome all obstacles and turn them into assets.

The Life Path 1 suggests that you entered this plane with skills allowing you to become a leader type rather easily. Your nature is charged with individualistic desires, a demand for independence, and the need for personal attainment. Many of our military generals, corporate leaders, and political leaders are men and women having the Life Path 1.

When you display positive 1 traits, your mind is capable of significant creative inspiration, and it possesses the enthusiasm and drive to accomplish a great deal. You’re very good at getting the ball rolling; initiating new projects is your forte. You’re at your best when confronted with obstacles and challenges, as you combat these with strength and daring. This is both the physical and inner varieties of strength. With this strength comes utter determination and the capability to lead. As a natural leader you have a flair for taking charge of any situation. You have a tendency to do this, even if, at times, it’s not appropriate for you to do so.

Highly original, you may have talents as an inventor or innovator of some sort. In any work that you choose, your independent attitude shows through. You have very strong personal needs and desires, and you feel it’s always necessary to follow your own convictions. You tire of routine and highly detailed tasks rather quickly.

You’re considered very good company, friendly, good-natured, and a wonderful conversationalist. People like you and are drawn to you.

The Shadow Side
The negative aspects of your number encourage the tendency to become dictatorial and tactless. Diplomacy is always the best tactic with which to get your way. Being dictatorial will negate your chances of success. Hypersensitivity is another negative aspect that must be controlled. It’s difficult for you to accept criticism, yet you can be rather critical of others. Allow your better instincts to prevail, and you should be able to subdue these negative qualities. Selfishness, depression, and vanity are other traits that can mitigate your success. Your path will be one of great power and success if you accept the role of leader and play it with all good faith, understanding, and generosity.

There are several ways that the negative side of the 1 can show up. The 1 always has the potential for greatness as a leader, but they may fail as a follower. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to follow for a while before you’re allowed to lead and this can be a difficult time. When the 1 Life Path person is not fully developed and expressing the negative side of this number, the demeanor may appear dependent rather than independent, particularly in the early years. If you’re expressing this negative trait of the number 1, you’re likely to be very dissatisfied with your circumstances and long for self-sufficiency. This might be defined as the weak or dependent side of the negative 1 Life Path. On the strong side of this negative curve, the 1 energy can become too self-serving, selfish, and egotistical. Avoid being too bossy and demanding.

Famous People with Life Path 1 Include:
Steve Jobs, Maya Angelou, Drew Barrymore, Michael Bolton, Nicolas Cage, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tom Clancy, George Clooney, Sean Connery, David Copperfield, Tom Cruise, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tom Hanks, Holly Hunter, Billy Joel, Scarlett Johansson, Magic Johnson, Wynonna Judd, Larry King, Calvin Klein, Matt Lauer, Matt LeBlanc, David Letterman, Tim McGraw, Jack Nicholson, Dan Rather, Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Kate Winslet, and Tiger Woods.

Life Path 1 Compatibility
The Life Path 1 person has a natural fit with Life Paths 1, 5, and 7. They get along well with Life Paths 3 and 9. They’re neutral with Life Path 8’s. But they find a challenge (or need to compromise) with Life Paths 2, 4 and 6.

How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

In Numerology, the Life Path Number represents natural characteristics, talents, and traits based on a person’s date of birth. On the day you were born certain powers were bestowed upon you that will be with you your entire life long. The Life Path Number describes the nature of your journey through life.

A person’s name may change (i.e., marriage, divorce), but unlike your name—your date of birth is unalterable and its personal vibrations shape every event or incident in your lifespan.

The Life Path number is the sum of your date of birth. It’s important to note that every Life Path Number has both positive and negative vibrations. It’s up to each of us to determine which one we’ll follow.

We’ve all known couples who don’t get along. They seem to constantly be at loggerheads because neither can understand or accept the other’s principles.

Someone born with a 5 Life Path, for instance, would have a strong urge to travel; whereas a person born with a 4 Life Path would have more of a “nose-to-the-grindstone” nature. These two could be potentially incompatible if they didn’t understand the nature of certain compromises necessary and possible in their relationship.

By using a simple calculation, you can check the Life Path Number of friends, family, acquaintances, employees, and partners for a better understanding of their aims in life and what you can expect of them as it relates to your own Life Path Number.

Remember, your Life Path number covers a person’s entire lifespan. Even though you may not currently recognize all the aspects of the path outlined, they’ll eventually be very much in evidence. Some people never recognize theirs until middle-age or after. So don’t worry if what you read isn’t all you at the moment.

The other all-important factor is whether one lives life according to its positive or negative vibrations. For instance: in a 5 Life Path, the travel indicated could represent progress in a positive sense, but great fickleness and irresponsibility when lived negatively.

How To Calculate Your Life Path Number
To determine your Life Path number, add together the number value of your month, day, and full year of birth, and then reduce the total to a single digit.  The number value for each month is:

January 1
February 2
March 3
April 4
May 5
June 6
July 7
August 8
September 9
October 10
November 11
December 12

For example, if like me you were born on September 28, 1957, you would add:

September (number value)  9
Date                                    28
Year                                1957
TOTAL                            1994

To reduce 1994 to a single digit:
1+9+9+4 = 23

But 23 is not a single digit so we need to reduce it again:
2+3 = 5

The Life Path number for a person whose date of birth is September 28, 1957, is 5.

The short method for obtaining this same number would be to add the dates this way:
9 (for September) +2+8 (for the date) + 1+9+5+7 (for the year) = 41.  Reduce this number to one digit by adding 4+1 which equals 5.

The Life Path Number represents your inborn characteristics, latent talent, moral fiber, and nature of this journey through life—all of which shape your life on earth.

By now you’ve noticed that the photographs I’ve used in this post don’t have anything to do with zodiac signs. However, I wanted to share pictures with you from the library-view I enjoyed while writing this post on December 18, 2010 in Encinitas, California (before the big rains started). For those of you who don’t know, I’m spending time with my dad during the holidays (Dec 16 – Jan 1). And by the way, at time of publishing this post, it appears that the weather has decided to behave itself – we haven’t had rain for 24-hours and things are beginning to dry up.

You’ve heard them all…
Are you lost? Because heaven’s a long way from here.
Do you have a map? I keep getting lost in your eyes.
Excuse me, but I think I dropped something—my jaw!
Hello, I’m a thief and I’m here to steal your heart.
If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put U and I together.

But quite possibly, the most popular pick-up line used for years was:

Y is for You

Who Are You? by Len Buchanan

Who Are You? by Len Buchanan

There are times during a session when I ask a client to tell me who they are. I preface this by saying, “I don’t want to know whose mother, wife, or daughter you are, what you do for a living, what group(s) you identify with, where you live, what you collect, or what you drive. When you take away all of those trimmings, who are you?

This question usually causes a long, thought-filled, inward examination. It’s a question that’s important for each of us to be able to answer for ourselves.

I remember Olivia (not her real name) who thought quietly about this question for the longest time. Eventually, tears slowly began to roll down her cheeks, but she was smiling. When she finally answered she said, I am enough.” That was the most powerful, profound answer I’d ever received. This is the place that we all need to be—I am enough!

An equally important question is why are you here? Not your geographic location, but your life purpose. Knowing why we’re here provides us with the most concrete and basic thing we can know about ourselves—that there’s an individual reason for each of us being here.

Many people believe that we “find” our purpose. Not me. I believe that we determine our purpose. There’s a big, whompin’ difference.

Who am I? you ask me.
I’m an extension of Source Energy; an expression of Divine Love.

What’s the purpose that I’ve determined? you’d like to know.
I determined that my purpose is to be a mindful agent of heart-based change—body, mind, and spirit.

What about you—Who are you? Why are you here?

“All my life, I always wanted to be somebody. Now I see that I should have been more specific.”

You remember the 1980 musical/romance film, Xanadu, with Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck, and Gene Kelly.

Xanadu—where time stops and the magic never ends.

Xanadu has come to represent the ideal, Nirvana, or paradise. The photograph in this post is of my dream cottage located in the extreme northern Highlands of Scotland. It represents my idea of utopia; my Xanadu.

Geographically speaking, where is your Xanadu?

By the way, Xanadu—the song by Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra—was ELO’s first and only #1 hit. The song has been touted as being the only song in the Billboard Hot 100 to begin with the letter “X”.

Paden Plume (Laurie's alter ego)

Paden Plume (Laurie’s alter ego)

Please note: the opinions expressed here are based on my perspective—that doesn’t make it right or wrong, it’s simply my point of view. I’d love for you to share yours.

What makes a person a writer?
The simple answer is, they write. If you put pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard (or voice to recorder, as the case may be)—you’re a writer.

The more complicated answer is that a writer is a person who has a love affair with language. They’re wooed by manipulating words; by painting word pictures. They can’t help expressing themselves—words flow down their arm through their fingertips, unchecked. They write regardless of who may, or may not, read their words.

Why do writers write?
Writer’s write because they can’t help themselves. It’s a compulsion; an automatic reflex like breathing, and equally essential.

My friend Susan said, “I write because it sucked me into my own personal matrix and I’m still looking for the exit!

What’s the difference between a writer and an author?
A writer is a person whose written work is yet unpublished. An author is a person whose written work is published.

Do you have a love affair with the written word?

Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.”

V is for Vitamins

Supplements by Laurie Buchanan

Supplements by Laurie Buchanan

No matter how well we eat, there are usually some nutritional gaps in our diet. Multivitamins and minerals are an easy and convenient way to help fill those gaps and insure that our bodies get all of the nutritional support they need every day.

There are 13 vitamins classified as either water soluble (C and B-complex) or fat soluble (A, D, E and K) each having a key role to play in our bodies.

Water Soluble Vitamins: Stored in the body for a brief period of time, water soluble vitamins are then excreted by the kidneys. The one exception is vitamin B12, which is stored in the liver. Water soluble vitamins need to be taken daily.

Fat Soluble Vitamin: Together with fat from the intestine, these vitamins are absorbed into the circulation. Any disease or disorder that affects the absorption of fat, such as celiac disease, can lead to a deficiency of these vitamins. Once absorbed into the circulation these vitamins are carried to the liver where they’re stored.

In addition to vitamins, our bodies need several minerals for the proper makeup of bone and blood, and for maintenance of normal cell function. These are divided into 2 groups:

Major minerals: phosphorous, calcium, sodium, potassium, chlorine, sulfur, and magnesium.

Trace minerals: iron, iodine, cobalt (from vitamin B12), chromium, selenium, copper, fluorine, manganese, zinc, and molybdenum.

Below I’ve provided a brief thumbnail sketch of some of key vitamins and minerals. It doesn’t include healthy oils (i.e., fish, garlic, flaxseed) or herbal supplements (i.e., milk thistle, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, echinacea).

Vitamin A – Vitamin A prevents eye problems, promotes a healthy immune system, is essential for the growth and development of cells, and keeps skin healthy.

Vitamin B-Complex – It’s my perspective that B vitamins should be taken as a complex, a combination of B vitamins that are essential for quality longevity, heart health, and aiding the body during times of stress. Here is a quick look at the individual B’s:

B-1 (also known as thiamin) helps the body to convert carbohydrates into energy and is necessary for the proper function of the heart, muscles, and nervous system.

B-2 (also known as riboflavin) is essential for turning carbohydrates into energy and producing red blood cells. It’s also important for vision.

B-3 (also known as niacin) helps the body convert food into energy. It helps maintain healthy skin and is important for nerve function.

B-6 is important for normal brain and nerve function. It also helps the body break down proteins and make red blood cells.

B-9 (also known as folic acid) helps the body make red blood cells, and is needed to make DNA.

B-12 helps to make red blood cells, and is important for nerve cell function.

Vitamin C is needed to form collagen, a tissue that helps to hold cells together. It’s essential for healthy bones, teeth, gums, and blood vessels. It helps the body to absorb iron and calcium, aids in wound healing, and contributes to brain function.

Calcium – Essential for teeth and building strong bones. Adequate calcium in a healthy diet may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Vitamin D Promotes the strength of the immune system, supports bone and joint health, and enhances calcium absorption. Vitamin D is unique in that the body is able to produce it when ultraviolet rays, specifically UVB, penetrate the skin. When these ultra violet rays come into contact with a compound in the skin called 7-dehydrocholesterol (a cholesterol precursor), this compound is converted to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (vitamin D3), the active form of vitamin D.

Vitamin E – is an antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage. It’s also important for the health of red blood cells, maintenance of a healthy heart, lungs, prostate, and enhances digestive tract function.

Folic Acid – aids in the prevention of birth defects when it is taken prior to conception. Given its potential to protect the health of newborns, healthcare professionals strongly advocate that women begin taken folic acid supplements three months prior to the time they plan to conceive.

Iron – helps red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body. Symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia include weakness and fatigue, lightheadedness, and shortness of breath.

Vitamin K – is necessary for blood clotting.

Magnesium – helps muscles and nerves to function, steadies the heart rhythm, and keeps bones strong. It also helps the body create energy and make proteins.

Phosphorous – helps form healthy bones and teeth. It also helps the body make energy. Every cell in the body needs phosphorus to function normally.

Potassium – helps with muscle and nervous system function. It also helps the body maintain the balance of water in the blood and body tissues.

Zinc – An infection fighting mineral, zinc is important for normal growth, strong immunity, and wound healing.

Not all vitamins and minerals are created equal, be sure to read the label. Naturally, you should work with your healthcare provider to find out which supplements you could benefit from, and how much is right for you taking into consideration your gender, age, weight, activity level, health concerns, and any medications you may be taking.

U is for Unity

Unity is Birthed by Individuals (UW-Madison by Laurie Buchanan)
Unity is Birthed by Individuals (UW-Madison by Laurie Buchanan)

Unity, though concerned with the larger group, is birthed by individuals—you and me. It’s my perspective the unity has two orientations:

Vertically, it’s our connection with Source Energy
Horizontally, it’s our connection with the people around us

The intersection of these two lines is the seat of compassion—the key ingredient for unity at its best.

Identification with a group is vital to how we define ourselves. The worth of any group lies in the behavior of its individual members. Every group has people who are positive, uplifting, constructive, and healing. And of course, every group has people who are otherwise.

Connecting with like-minded people helps to make us aware of our inherent unity. When we’re warmly included—validated—it nurtures a warm sense of belonging; a sense that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

One of my friends, an aspiring writer shared, “I wish I weren’t so shallow. But sadly, honestly, I am. I wait for validation. I wait for recognition. I wait to be invited … by him … by her … by them … by the publishing world. While I wait, I sharpen the tools of my craft and I dream.”

There are a multitude of groups we can align ourselves with: ethnicity, religious affiliation, spiritual tradition, sexual orientation, and political association—to name but a few. Regardless, as the camel driver in Paul Coelho’s book The Alchemist said, “All of our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand.” Inherent unity.

Being one’s authentic self within a group is vital. Frank Lloyd Wright, the father of organic architecture said, “The reality of a building is the space within. And what you put into that space will affect how you live in it and what you become. Don’t clutter the place with stuff that does not ennoble it.”

His point is that it’s the details that express the whole. This is equally true of our personal ecology—inner landscape—which brings us right back to the beginning. Unity, though concerned with the larger group, is birthed by individuals at our compassion-filled, authentic best.
