Turning the Page

Entering a new year is like turning a page in a brand new book where we’re the author and get to write our own story. Here’s to happy, healthy storylines!

Speaking of pages…

At my publisher, SparkPress, Tabitha Lahr is the graphic artist who designs the interior pages for the Sean McPherson novels. I love what she’s done with Impervious, book #3.

It releases on April 4th. You can preorder it now from your favorite bookseller.

I turned a lot of pages in 2022:

At the beginning of each year, I set a reading goal on Goodreads. When I finish reading a book, if I can give it three or more stars, I write a bite-sized review and post it on Goodreads, Bookbub, and Amazon. It’s my way of saying “Thank you” to the author.

Thank YOU, book lovers, for reading, reviewing, and sharing Sean McPherson book recommendations with others, for requesting the series at your local libraries and bookstores, and for cheering me on and supporting me!

  • Iniquity (book #4) is with the publisher for a spring 2024 release.
  • I’m so close to writing “The End” on Illusionist (book #5) that I can almost taste it! It will be released in the spring of 2025.
  • Then on to books #6, #7, and #8—and hopefully even more after that!

Please follow me on BookBub. I currently have 760 followers and would like to take advantage of the perks made available to authors with 1,000+ followers. Here’s a LINK.

Book Fairies

Yesterday I took part in Hide a Book Day with Goodreads who’d teamed up with the Book Fairies (#ibelieveinbookfairies) and thousands of authors all around the globe to hide books for people to find, read, and leave for the next person.

After affixing the unique Book Fairies sticker, I bound mine with color-coordinated curling ribbon, then hid ten signed copies of Note to Self: A Seven-Step Path to Gratitude and Growth throughout Boise, Idaho. I opted for high foot-traffic locations such as the airport, the Towne Square mall, the capitol building, and several coffee shops in historic downtown.

If you’re an author, I hope you were able to participate. If you’re an avid reader, I hope you found a book left by a book fairy.

When was the last time you were touched by a bit of magic?

Reading and Writing – NOT Arithmetic

During my three month sabbatical (Jan-Mar) to finish writing The Business of Being, my schedule was simple:

  • WRITE during the day
  • READ in the evening

Some of the books I read were serious; others were laugh-out-loud funny!

When I finish reading a book, if I can give it three or more stars, I write a brief review/recommendation and post it on Goodreads and Amazon. These are the books I read and enjoyed during my sabbatical:

Some people hesitate to write book reviews because they feel they have to be long and involved, but many of the best reviews are short. Here’s one of my favorites:

Note to Self: A Seven-Step Path to Gratitude and Growth is “as good for you as kale, but reads like chocolate—smooth, rich, and fun.” —Leanne Dyck

When you enjoy a book, do you typically write a brief review/recommendation?

When Breath Becomes Air

When my friend, Shirley Hershey Showalter, wrote about When Breath Becomes Air in her blog post, When Time Shall Be No More: Kalanithi and Kairos, on February 10, 2016, I read it immediately following the book I was currently reading. Shirley’s wisdom and track record are such that when she recommends something, you don’t hesitate.

It’s rare that I use my blog to share about books that I’ve read. An avid reader and reviewer, I use Goodreads and Amazon for that purpose. However, I feel so strongly about When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi that I’m sharing it here.

After reading devouring the book, this is the review I posted on Goodreads and Amazon:

“For over two decades a particular book held the highly coveted all-time-favorite-book place in my heart. In one fell swoop, WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR single-handedly took its place. Each word chosen with tremendous care, the writing is exquisite. A call to action, the reader can’t help but sit down and carefully examine the nooks and crannies of their essence to discover what it is—exactly—that gives their individual life meaning. A call to action, this book is going to change your life!” —Laurie Buchanan

To date, what is your all-time favorite book?
