“Laurie, the way you energized and captivated the audience at the retreat center was magical! From the moment you started speaking, and throughout your often hilarious, yet compelling presentation, you held us in the palm of your hand. I felt like you had known the audience for a long time because you connected with them so well.”

My presentations include:
Author to Author
In this interactive session, you’ll learn about the care and feeding of your muse, how to shift your perspective, and how to capture original thoughts and creative ideas. We’ll explore tying your professional work and day-to-day activities to being an author. And we’ll discuss how to submit articles about your home/work life for publication, the trials of submission, and the sting of rejection.
Creating an Artist’s Statement and Writer’s Resume
In this hands-on workshop you will begin creating two powerful documents to include in your author portfolio:
- Artist statement — communicates your vision and creative process
- Writer’s resume — gives voice to your writing experience and accomplishments
Important professionally, influencers in the creative industry expect authors to be able to articulate the why’s and wherefores behind their work.
Building Your Author Brand
Equally crucial in self, traditional, or hybrid publishing, your author brand is the impression that you and your words leave on readers. It’s what sets you apart—distinguishes you—from other authors. In this session, you’ll learn to create and deliver an experience that your readers uniquely associate with you, your books, your blog, and your social media presence.
Creating a Successful Book Launch
From establishing a web presence to hosting a one-year post-launch book birthday party—and everything in-between—this session details obtaining book reviews, building an email distribution list, approaching influencers for endorsement blurbs, and crafting the ever-important elevator pitch—with specific examples. It shows authors how to wield advance reader copies (ARCs) for optimum results, host Goodreads giveaways—with an example of a note to include with each book—and how to create and leverage a Facebook fan page and other social media platforms. We’ll also cover pre-writing and scheduling content, and effective ways to use publicity materials such as bookmarks and postcards, and specific ways to establish and maintain visibility while boosting sales.
Good Writing is Rewriting
Writing for publication isn’t for sissies—it’s not for the faint of heart. In this interactive presentation, you’ll learn practical, easy-to-incorporate tips and techniques that will help you to turn rewrite into delight, including how to cool the flames of frustration and knock down the barriers of writer’s block. This workshop is about getting bare—stripping away preconceived ideas about the right and wrong ways of getting the job done.
Bringing the best of both worlds together, hybrid publishing encompasses the middle ground between traditional and self-publishing. Many hybrid publishers have a selective acquisitions process, a strong editorial vision, offer traditional distribution (and the associated benefits), the ability to have your book preordered, along with submission to traditional review channels such as Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, Booklist, and Library Journal. Some hybrid publishers even have in-house marketing and publicity teams. In this interactive presentation, you’ll discover who they are, why I chose hybrid publishing, and why it might be an excellent option for you.
The Anatomy of Blogging
In this interactive presentation, we’ll discuss the importance of a high-traffic blog to a writer’s platform, free blog hosts, how to tie a blog to a website and social networks, and how to build blogging relationships. We’ll explore user-friendly ways to make your content easy to discover. And we’ll talk about the ever-important reader: how to keep them coming back, how to get them to comment, and how to make it easy for them to stay updated.
Why Critiquing is Necessary
Have you ever been requested to rewrite a paragraph, page, or section? Have you ever been asked to turn a chapter inside out? In this presentation, I discuss my writing journey of working with UW Madison’s Christine DeSmet. A journey of accepting feedback in the vein it is given—to make my manuscript sell. From rewriting, rewriting again, query letter, book proposal, and submission, and having my feet held to the fire (so to speak) this is an ongoing experience of a lifetime; one that’s resulted in a multi-award-winning book, Note to Self: A Seven-Step Path to Gratitude and Growth.
HOLISTIC HEALTH TOPICS
The Color of Wellness
Color is simply energy—energy made visible. As human beings, color is the only energy we can actually see. The colors we wear and surround ourselves within our home and office stimulate or inhibit the way we think and feel, and the way our body’s organs, glands, and systems function. Have you ever wondered why you’re drawn to certain colors and repulsed by others? During this interactive presentation, you’ll discover what your color attraction and repulsion means, how it’s influencing you—body, mind, and spirit—and how you can realize personal transformation through the use of color.
Determine Your Purpose
Have you been waiting to find your purpose? Well, look no further. We don’t find our purpose, we determine it. In this interactive presentation, you will learn about yourself from the inside, out. And if you haven’t already, you’ll determine your purpose while you’re at it.
Dressed to Kill
As a holistic health practitioner specializing in energy medicine, my curiosity was piqued by the correlation between energy blockages and things we do on a regular basis that unwittingly harms the package we reside in—our physical body. Dressed to Kill is a high-energy, interactive presentation that’s a fun and engaging way to learn about the potential dangers of ordinary, everyday items. From underwire bras and spike heels, to hair color, and everything in-between, this presentation takes an eye-opening look at what’s taking a toll on your whole health—body, mind, and spirit.
