Airing Laundry

One of my favorite posts on Janet Givens blog is when she wrote about clotheslines. In reading that post, I learned that people are passionate about whether outdoor clotheslines should be allowed, or not. In some places, they’re actually outlawed.

When I saw Luna’s adorable cloth diapers drying on a rack in Evan and Kayley’s house, I just knew there was a post in it!

Airing our Laundry

I’m passionate about not airing ones laundry (private matters) publicly. This practice is commonly referred to as airing one’s dirty laundry. In reality, I don’t know anyone who hangs dirty laundry out to dry—most of us hang clean laundry.

Maybe it stems from the way I was raised, or because I don’t have oodles of dirty little secrets. Either way, I don’t talk about private matters publicly.

What’s your take on airing “dirty” laundry?

  1. I see this post has popped up again and just had to comment. Luna’s clothesline is indoors! Does that count? 🙂
Anyway, thank you for the nod. As for airing dirty laundry, my first thought is that what is dirty is often quite subjective. Yes? That private-public boundary is an important but a slippery one. I deal each week with women who have been shouldering family secrets for decades and it is only in the airing, the sharing, the spilling if you will of those secrets that their healing begins. So, it’s a tricky topic and an important one. As always.

  2. Janet — This RE-post (along with three others) is a result of having had a major issue with WordPress where their technicians have had to bring down and then restore my content. In doing so, it’s wreaked havoc. Oh, the joys of modern-day technology.

I loved what you shared about women shouldering family secrets and your observation that it’s in the airing, the sharing/spilling, that they begin to heal. Experientially, I know this to be true.

    • Hi Laurie. I did think something like that had happened. Oh my! How grateful you must be that you’ve got good coping skills.

Who do you host with? I’ve just left a solo guy out of Arizona and find with InMotion.

Fingers crossed it gets sorted out before Tuesday. 🙂
