I’m excited to share that I’ve signed my third publishing contract. In the photo below I’m mailing it back to the publisher. This book is slated to hit the shelves in August 2020. I’m over the moon with excitement—Woohoo!

My first two books are nonfiction.

For my third book, I’m taking a walk on the wild side and writing a suspense novel that takes place in the Pacific Northwest. No spoilers here, that’s all I’m sharing right now. Stay tuned for carrot-dangling details.

This book wouldn’t be possible without the Pathway to Publication program at the Writers’ Institute and my writing mentor, Christine DeSmet. We’ve worked together before, and it’s a privilege to work with her again.

The next Writers’ Institute is April 4-7. I’ve attended as a student and as a teacher—both. I can tell you experientially that it’s one of the best writing conferences in the country!

A few months before publication, I’ll be looking for mystery-suspense-thriller authors to read my third book for potential author endorsement blurbs. If you fall into that category and are interested, please let me know via email by using the contact page.

  5. Good luck, Laurie. I’ve written quite a number of books, including thrillers, but they don’t sell well and I’m not known at all, so I’m sure you’ll find more suitable endorsers. If you are after regular reviews, you might want to check Rosie’s Book Review Team once the book is close to publication.

  7. How exciting! Congratulations. I have written a book. A few actually but only one was traditionally published in hard copy. The others are e-books. They are all non-fiction.
    I really admire people who write fiction. Wish I could, but I’m terrible with dialog.

  8. I too admire those who write fiction. Yes, I’ve had about 8 books published by traditional publishers, not independent houses. BUT it was a long time ago and much easier to send a proposal in “over the transom” as they said and without an agent. Congratulations on your contract and best wishes sticking to it. 🙂

  9. Congratulations!! Very exciting. I’m sure with your capacity to attend to environment (providing a wealth I suspect of rich context) and wit (which keep the reader wondering) this first fiction foray will be a great hit. I can hardy wait … but then I must.

But I was determined because I so wanted to let you know that I am doing a crazy happy dance with excitement for your latest mystery writing contract. Congratulations!   16. Well done Laurie,

    As you know – I write a bit.
    I have started draft 6.
    Finding both the right level of detail, and getting the timing somewhere near optimal, are not easy.
    Hardest is what to leave out, and still achieve a sufficient level of coherence – often things that look like a simple hop from one idea to the next appear as vast chasms to others. So I need to build a metaphorical aircraft to let them fly high enough that they can see the landscape, but still travel with speed and comfort (the grand canyon isn’t quite so daunting from 30,000 ft, but standing on the edge the idea of crossing it on foot is daunting – but quite fun in a Cesna)..

  17. Congratulations, Laurie! I believe, back in the day, I once thought about writing fiction, but the concept of character and plot development would be beyond me, I believe. I am best at meandering. Looking forward to hear how it’s going as you progress.

  27. Yee-Haw!! Glad to see you make that leap of Faith and put it into words we can follow. I am a dedicated reader of fiction and can hardly wait…. I’ve had people tell me I should write a book, but lately I can hardly stay still long enough to read one, much less to write one.It takes a lot more focus than I can muster. You are a dedicated writer and author ( yes, there is a difference, for those who didn’t realize it. An author is a published writer.), doing what you are best at doing. You write and I will gladly read!

    • Marian — Yes, my feet have been traipsing down a rather wooly path for quite some time. When I ran away from home at age 15, little did I know that some of the locations along the way would would stand me in good story-telling stead decades later. There’s always a silver lining! 🙂

  34. Congratulations, Laurie. I’ll bet your foray into fiction will be at least as successful as your non-fiction has been. If I can offer any other advice/experience/view-from-the-trenches to you during your writing, let me know.

    I intend to publish my third novel next year too! 🙂 But I’ve been lousy at predicting timelines, releases, etc., so I’ll simply say I’m working on number three and it’ll be done when it’s done. 🙂

  47. Congratulations Laurie, you clever ol thing you . Can’t wait to read it , there are no end to your skills ,bless you .
    I have written for years , short stories , one , possibly two complete books , poems , you name it …but sadly I’ve given up . There is not the amenities here in West Wales that I had in the Midlands sadly . Do enjoy your success my sweet .
