Baggage! We all carry it with us through life. It comes in a wide variety of styles, shapes, and colors—more than enough to accommodate the stuff that we accumulate through life. And no matter how we dress it up, it’s frustrating, inconvenient, and slows us down. In fact, it’s downright disruptive.
This book is about offloading emotional baggage—something that’s especially important when we realize that we don’t just pack for one; we pack for seven. Each of the seven selves—self-preservation, self-gratification, self-definition, self-acceptance, self-expression, self-reflection, and self-knowledge—has characteristics, wellness types, and shadows. Each plays a vital role in harmony, overall health, and well-being.
Chock full of real-life emotional examples, as well as “keys” at the end of each chapter offering actionable tips, techniques, and exercises designed to help you unlock baggage, examine it, and offload it permanently, Note to Self will help you discover a lighter, joy-filled you!
Here’s what two of the advance readers had to say:
“While we are all passengers on a planet called Earth, we can choose to enhance the way in which we travel: emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, and physically. In fact, we can, through the pages of this book, discover new ways to travel that are lighter, more fluid, and life-enhancing. The author, a wise and dedicated traveler, is also the right kind of kind of guide—caring, inspiring, uplifting, knowledgeable—for your journey of self-discovery. I recommend this tremendous book to anyone seeking the companionship of good energy and joyful presence. A five-star read in every way!”
—D.A. Hickman, author of The Silence of Morning: A Memoir of Time Undone
“What a dazzling rainbow of wisdom Laurie Buchanan has assembled into one volume! Drawing on a wide range of spiritual teachers and scientific discoveries, Buchanan guides the reader on an exciting journey of self-discovery. She is a modern oracle at Delphi, and this book a modern temple with ‘Know Thyself’ written on every page. Highly recommended for daily spiritual practice (a list of 365 questions at the end will guide journal writing). Leaders of retreats, and spiritual seekers will be sharing well-thumbed, dog-eared copies soon.”
—Shirley Hershey Showalter, former president of Goshen College and author of Blush: A Mennonite Girl Meets a Glittering World
I’m looking forward to November 1, 2016—the publication date of Note to Self.
What’s the next date/event that you’re looking forward to?

Well done! I’d love to get the book. Will you publish it on digital format too? We are planning to sell the house and move to Spain in a couple of years and we am trying to limit the amount of things we buy and take with us, as it will be a big move.
Best of luck with the publication. I don’t want to wish the summer away, but roll on November! 🙂
Fatima — Thank you!
I’m pleased to say that “Note to Self” will be available WHEREever and HOWever books are sold 🙂
Hi Laurie – been looking forward to today for a few years – as you well know.

While I make plans, I also try to “live life in day tight compartments” (to quote Carnegie).
Ted — When I read your cancer-cured post my heart put on its dancing shoes! 🙂

I’m pleased as punch at this announcement, Laurie. Even if I didn’t admire the distilled wisdom I read weekly on your blog here, the blurbs by Daisy and Shirley would do the trick. The colorful cover too suggests this will be a page-turner.
What am I looking forward to? A writers’ retreat that begins tomorrow. I’ve met only one participant face to face. The others are virtual friends – faith becoming sight.
Again, congratulations!
Marian — You’re going to have a wonderful time at the writers’ retreat and please know that I FULLY expect to read about it on your blog! 🙂
Laurie, I’m so pleased to hear you announcing the reveal of your new “baby”, it has been a labor of love on all counts. I can’t wait to read it, apply it to my own situation and pass it on to Dennis who has baggage of his own to be left behind. Next date I am looking forward to? That would be our wedding day, trusting that God has a specific one in mind, one that will be perfect for us.
Sandi – You, better than most, know how long the gestation period for this baby has been. When it’s “born” it should have hair, teeth, and car keys!
I’m absolutely confident that the day you and Dennis get married is going to be the IDEAL one — one that can’t be improved on in any way, shape, or form.
“Hair, teeth and car keys” — Cracking up!
Beautiful cover! This is exciting to see it and have a date!
An event that I’m looking forward to in a little over a month is taking my oldest son to Great Wolf Lodge water park hotel for his birthday. He has no idea. It will be great quality time spent with our little family swimming, laughing and enjoying each other.
Lana — Ohhhhhhh how fun! That’s going to be quite the surprise; a memory he’ll cherish for a lifetime!
Congratulations! Wonderful reviews, Laurie.

Congratulations Laurie. I definitely want to buy your book when it comes out. What day am I looking forward to?. Whatever day I can finally get out in my garden and start doing some gardening out there. Unfortunately, unlike one of your followers above that won’t be this week or even this month. But I have my indoor plants and plans for the outdoor garden for now and saw some amazing gardens at the Canada Blooms Show here in Toronto last Saturday..
Sharon — It’s wonderful that you’ve got indoor plants and plans. Ahh yes, there’s nothing better than playing in dirt!
Congratulations Laurie! I know the thrill of finishing a book. Wonderful accomplishment! Much joy and success to you. Sounds like a terrific read! 🙂
HelpWithYourLife — Thank you so much for your well wishes 🙂
Cover looks great. Can’t wait to get a copy.
Jennifer – Thank you so much!
So excited for your new book and the reviews are great! Congratulations!
The next thing I am looking forward to is bed!!! I shared in a post a while back that even numbered years are always a struggle from beginning to end and this year is not letting me down with it’s struggles since the first week of January.
Just yesterday the horse started showing signs of pain again, a co-worker who was cancer free for a year told me it’s returned, another co-worker (both of whom I have worked with for 25 years) told me her daughter’s boyfriend broke up with her leaving her devastated, my daughters best friend was diagnosed with alopecia last week and it progressed over the weekend and she had to have her head shaved (she’s 13!!), and I spent from 10 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. in the ER with my mother who was having severe back pain (all turned out ok in the end). And that was just ONE day!!! But I’m proclaiming that’s the end of the “evil even number curse!!”
So 3 hours of sleep is/was not enough but I’m at work, kids made it to school and we have a busy evening before I can hit the sheets lol!
Tina — Oh my blessed word! Each one of the things you named is huge in and of itself. Together they’re beyond overwhelming!
Laurie, I am very excited for you! Congratulations!! I love the invitational character of the cover. I look forward to reading your book. And, I further look forward to the reflections your book will bring. Can’t wait, okay I can wait but hope the time passes quickly.
Audrey — I love the term you used, “invitational character” for the book cover. Now I’m smiling even bigger than I was before! 🙂
Love the cover, Laurie!
Dorothy – Thank you! 🙂
Love the cover, Laurie. And I’m honored to offer my heartfelt opinion. I know you have poured so much of your life’s work into it.
My next event. Owen is turning five on March 31, and we’ll be with him and his family the weekend following his birthday.
Shirley — You can’t begin to know how much your author endorsement means to me; it’s such an honor!
I know you’re going to have a complete and total blast when you help Owen celebrate his 5th birthday! 🙂
Laurie – Congratulations!!! Other than my May 24th wedding date, THIS release date IS a date I am very much excited for! I already have it down as the Christmas gift everyone is getting! CAN. NOT. WAIT. Woohoo for you!!! Love, Sherry Schweder

Congratulations Laurie! I like the title and the cover is great.
TimelessLady —Thank you so much! 🙂
Congrats Laurie. Look forward to reading it with Sandi. We all have “baggage.” It seems for every journey I pack light, just the essentials. But on the return trip, I have to reconsider what I can actually fit in my bag and take home. So I ask myself, “What will still be essential upon returning home?” The airport once lost my suitcase. They assured me that it would be be sent to my motel by morning. But to tide me over, they gave me a bag marked “The Essentials.” It was smaller than a lunch box. I looked at it and thought sarcastically, “Ahhh, so these are the essentials!” But, you know what? It was enough. Dennis
Dennis — I just learned something new… Never checking my bag, I didn’t know about “The Essentials” bag the airlines keep handy in the event they lose one’s baggage. Smart on their part. I’m glad it was enough.
PS, forgot to answer the question: My Wedding day.
Dennis – Wise woman that I am, I knew, Knew, KNEW that!
Sounds like just what I need to read…its on my list of books to get in the future…thanks…can’t wait…Kat
Kat — I’m so glad the description resonated with you. Thank you for letting me know 🙂
Great news, Laurie! Congratulations on your accomplishment! I look forward to reading it.
Tiny – Thank you! 🙂
Congrats! This is exciting. I’m looking forward to its publication.
Sheryl – Thank you! 🙂
Congratulations, Laurie. I hope your book sells well. I’ll put it on my “to read” list.

Chris
Chris — Your book release is coming down the pike waaaaay sooner than mine. Woohoo! Exciting times! 🙂
We are looking forward to a two day family trip to Gettysburg beginning on April 9th. 🙂
Sam — Take lots (and lots!) of photos! 🙂

My work here is done then :).
Sounds great – and it is a wonderful cover. Make sure to let me know nearer the time so I can feature you on my blog 🙂

I love the cover, Laurie. Makes the title jump out. I know your readers will be just as impressed with the inside as well. Congratulations. Cigars all around? (metaphorical ones, anyway).
Janet — I’m glad you like it! And I’ve never passed up a metaphorical cigar 🙂
