Peas in a Pod

An early fall walk reveals a hint of change in the local flora and fauna. In the photo below you see a large pod I found on the Greenbelt along the Boise river. When I got home, I carefully opened it to see how many “peas” the pod contained.

The expression “peas in a pod” alludes to the seeds in a pod that bear a close resemblance to each other. Sure enough, the “peas” in this pod are like identical triplets!

And while many of us look similar to our family members, it’s been said that each of us has a doppelgänger — a non-biological twin.

I’ve been told on numerous occasions that I look like Peter Pan (not kidding), especially as portrayed by Mary Martin.

  1. I have been told that among my sisters, I look most like my mother.

    Jumping off on the peas-in-a-pod metaphor, I feel like one little pea in a very expansive pod among writers and readers in blog-land. It’s a great feeling.

  2. My father’s father. Sometime in the late 90’s I was working at the Union League in Philadelphia managing a dinning room there. When I get called over to a table of younger lady and a women most likely in her late 80’s, who called me Weldon, she thought I was either my uncle or my grandfather which I came find out she was referring to my Grandfather who she had known as a teacher to his son’s. I didn’t know my grandfather really, so that was kind of an interesting event and so out of place.

  4. I can’t think of anyone I’ve been compared to, but I’ve run across people who look someone I know. That’s always strange. 🙂

    I agree with Marian about your top photo–really stunning image with the red, green, and the purple that really makes it pop!

    • Merrill — I’ve had that happen, too. So much so that I’ve told a few people, “I saw your twin!” (even though they don’t have one). I’m glad you enjoyed the header photo. I photographed it in a plant nursery because I, too, liked it so much 🙂

  5. I have been told I look like many people but one that comes to mind , who is the most famous is Princess Diana . I have to be honest it’s extremely flattering but I really don’t look like her at all …I may of had her hairstyle in the 80s but that’s it . But for some reason people think I look like her.

  8. I met my doppleganger – a complete stranger. One time I walked into a room in another city and people started waving at me. I’d never been there before and didn’t know anyone, so I thought, “Wow, people are really friendly here.” One person came up to talk to me thinking I was this other person, and I had to work hard to convince him that I wasn’t who he thought I was. When this other person did arrive and we met face to face, even we couldn’t believe the resemblance. It was eerie.

  11. How might I answer this question Laurie? I am sometimes told that I look like one of my aunts on my dad’s side or my grandmother in my mother’s side. Mostly it depends what I am doing I guess or which parts of the family I am around. Then there is my daughter who people say looks like me. I seldom see the resemblance with my own eyes but sometimes catch it in photographs. But there is another factor that I think is as powerful as looking alike and that is being alike. My daughter and I definitely are being two peas in a pod. And that brings me to you and how often we have joked about being like sisters when going about being who we are. I like that. I will share a metaphorical pod with you anytime Laurie 🙂

  12. When I was younger I was told that I resembled Catherine Deneuve. I did not even know who she was. I am enjoying your posts and I love how you have the life paths on your site.   15. I think we all do have a “twin” somewhere out there. I’ve been told I look like Trisha Yearwood since I was a teenager. A friend even entered me in a People magazine look-a-like contest a few years back lol. I made it to the top 10 but didn’t win. Wish I had a touch of her wealth though 🙂

  16. I’ve been told I look like my mother, like some guy’s old girlfriend and like the British singer Lulu (the latter many years ago when we were both young. Lulu is my age). But no matter who or what we look like, we are individuals with individual needs, wants, likes, dislikes, traits (good and bad), etc.

  17. Well, Laurie, this post certainly resonates with me as my maiden name was “Pease” and we had pea pod items–photos, signs, salt and pepper shakers–you name it– all over our homes. We even named our cottage at the lake “Pease’s Pod” and my brother made a wooden sign of a pea pod for the entrance. None of us really look alike. Your photo Is gorgeous. 🙂

  18. Funny, we were just talking about this the other day! Once, when I had been selected to model in a hair show at a huge convention of hair dressers in Savannah, Georgia, I was approached by a group of women and asked if I was Gloria Steinem. I was surprised of course, but hugely gratified! On other occasions I have been asked, “Don’t I know you? You look very familiar to me.” Unless I am talking with a very old and senior citizen, my stock reply is, “No, I don’t think so but you may have seen me on television.”. Immediately I can see renewed interest sparked in their eyes, and as they inhale to articulate the next question, I quickly cut them off at the pass by adding, “Not really…I just have one of those faces that seem familiar to many people, I seem to have doppelgangers scattered everywhere.”

  19. That’s an amazing pod — the peas are the size of your thumb nail, Laurie. Wow.

    I’ve been told over and over, throughout my life, that I look(ed) like my mom.

    When I moved to my island home I collected strange inquires…
    “How’s your son?” (I don’t have a son)
    “How’s (husband’s name)?” (the name given was not my husband’s name.)
    I was intrigued. I kept my eyes open and soon the mystery was solved. My doppelganger was a long-time, well loved resident. And that made fitting into my new community so much easier. Having a doppelganger rocks! : )

  21. My fifth grade teacher told me I looked like Ingrid Bergman. I didn’t know who that was, of course, but I was flattered anyway.

    Another famous person I’ve been compared to is Anne Murray, the singer.

    I like the way you take common expressions and make something uncommon out of them. Sounds like a Peter Pan activity. Twinkle, twinkle.

  22. I have never been told I look like someone famous. But I have been told I remind them of someone else I don’t know. I’ve often used heard the expression used as those who agree with other. I have lots of those, so I suppose I am a member of a pod!

  24. I look like my mother but outside of my family… I was told Natasha Kinsky many years back, but although I’d like to, I never saw it…It’s a fascinating idea, though.

  25. crazy as it may sound, I have been told by people who have no connection in this world that I have the Mona Lisa smile and eyes…I take this as a compliment even though she is not all that striking…LOL

  28. Ah Laurie, I always loved the two peas in a pod analogy! Fabulous post here! Some tell me I look like James Coco, and others like a Mafioso. Ha! I’m not quite sure if these are compliments or not!! 🙂

  30. My oldest told me that I looked like Danny. 2 years later, my youngest made friends with his daughter. Perhaps we are now seen as brothers when going for a beer …
