A Glimpse in the Rearview Mirror

Willa loves to stick her head out the window when we drive. Looking back in the mirror, I see her gleefully catching some G-force!

In December we sold our commercial building in historic downtown Crystal Lake, Illinois. My last day in the structure was yesterday — December 31, 2012.

Just prior to that, one of my friends — artist, Donna Jill Witty — gifted me with a beautiful watercolor rendition of HolEssence so that I could always remember our building.

Another friend, Pat, asked, “Are you going to do any “hands on” energy-based therapy somewhere else?”

I shared with her that while the “hands on” aspect of things is now in the rearview mirror, looking forward my focus is on the “hearts on” aspect of things — the Life Harmony experience — something that I already do with clients all over the globe:

  • For people who use Mac’s, we enjoy one-on-one sessions via FaceTime
  • For people who use PC’s, we enjoy one-on-one sessions via Skype

In my experience, every year outdoes the previous one. If this trend continues,
I expect 2013 to top them all!

What’s in your rearview mirror?

  1. Interesting dialogue about baggage at Life Harmony, Laurie. I am reading a book that Ann Marquette recommended: The Untethered Soul (got it on my Kindle for less than $7.00!). I just read last night the part about Samskaras storing events and the emotions associated with those events, how storing these events also stores energy and blocking my heart blocks energy. The sermon at the Sunday service I just attended had an analogy about someone trying to walk through a doorway but was carrying too much baggage to fit through. And, now here you are, talking to me about having too much baggage. Someone told me that if I hear of something twice, pay attention, but if I hear something THREE times, that is Spirit talking and take action. You and I need to talk about me getting rid of some of this baggage. I’d like to see it in my rearview mirror at the end of 2013.

    • Barbara – One. Two. Three time’s a charm. “The Untethered Soul” is a great book, isn’t it?! Happy New Year to you and yours – may it be filled with health and joy. May 2013 be the year you travel light, travel fast!

  2. Looking in my rearview mirror I see myself struggling to build a career in knitwear design. I’m pleased to say that my experience has been that knitters are a generous lot. They showed their generousity to me both through emails and one-on-one. As a way of attracting surfers, I began to share the fiction I’d penned on my knitwear designer’s blog. Their support encouraged me to eye my stories in new light. Now that I’m a writer who knits rather than a knitter who writes I share my hand knitting paterns with them, for free, on my blog. A year (or is it two years) after my decision to close my knitwear design business, I see sunshine and blue skies ahead of me and fond memories behind me. It’s the best way to travel.
Thank you for your fine post, Laurie.
Best wishes for success, happiness and peace in 2013.

  3. Congratulations, congratulations for selling your structure!!! Wow~~this is so cool. For the last two days I have kept thinking, over and over again, that it’s time to write you an email and ask how that was coming along. And, look, you have such exciting news! Happiest of New Years to you, Laurie, and for all the adventures that will come in 2013.

    • Kathy – Many of my “in-person” clients kept asking me if I was sad. And while closing that particular chapter was bittersweet, I know full well (as do you) that every ending is a stepping stone to a new beginning. There’s a multitude of wonderful adventures that will unfold this year, and I for one am extremely excited to see what blossoms!

  4. Congrats on selling your building. Sounds like you have exciting work in your future. Sara and I are beginning a season of change, as well–something I should be able to share in about another month. It’s a delightful and deepening time. Happy New Year, Laurie!
    Hugs,
    Kathy

    • Kathy M. – Now you’ve piqued my curiosity. I look forward to finding out more about what you and Sara are up to. May good health be your faithful companion, peace your guarded ally, and love your perpetual guide in the New Year!

  5. Happy New Year. I would very much like to FaceTime with you now and then. What is your address? You can e-mail if you’d like. I’m so excited for you & Len and all that’s ahead for you. You’re the bravest people I know!! I know all your dreams will come true because you’ll see to it. Much love to you both. Sylvia, Ken & Buddy

  6. Very good question! I see a lot of smoke and dust at present, actually for me that means clouded or uncertain decisions, health issues that obscure my clear vision of forward motion. Maybe I will not take as many slow-paced back roads this year, hopefully hit the highway and put the pedal down to cover lots of ground!

  7. Laurie, I’m glad you have the beautiful watercolor rendition of your former building. I always was attracted to that place; it felt dear and welcoming. I know selling it was important to your moving forward.
And yet, even I am already in the midst of your change. I know each person’s change has ripples in the universe. I’m feeling your ripples. I’m excited and happy for your amazing positve changes … as writer and author, as “heart tender” and likely so much more. And then again, I’m sorry to know the “hands on” work is over … as someone who experienced your gifts and strong energy there. So I have a some sadness for that. Still, I’m here to support in spirit where ever you see yourself going … although I doubt support is needed. It seems as an observer … you are ready to move forward and have positive energy about it. Best wishes as you take up your smaller baggage and move on! I see so many possibilities.

    • Audrey – thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU for your words of support and encouragement here today. I appreciate YOU! May good health be your faithful companion, peace your guarded ally, and love your perpetual guide in the New Year!

  8. Reflecting on my own moment in time … I love the metaphor of the car and looking in the rear view mirror. I was taught in drivers ed (way back in high school) that one needed to keep looking in all directions as one drives … primarily forward and always scanning in the rear view mirrow and the side mirrors … to be aware of what is happening all around us. It is a great metaphor for me … being aware always of what we are carrying forward as well as leaving behind from the past; who is traveling with us on our side; what possibilities do we see ahead of us.

A gifted intuitive I once studied with shared the concept of life cycles (forgive me if I have mentioned this before). There are these natural life cycles … in the economy; in society; in the world. The Christian bibles references 7 year cycles; 7 x 7 the 49th year being a major cycle point (can’t remember what it is called). I once charted my life in 9 year cycles; it amounts to a type of bell curve. The early years of the cycle related to nurturing the new; mid years establishing, blossoming; bearing fruit and harvesting; and the final year being clearing away and preparing.

As it turns out I’m in the 9th year of a 9 year cycle. I have sensed it (without pulling out my cycle folder). Part of the clearing away (really honoring and leaving legacy tracks) is the memoir I’m beginning to writing … pulling out key chapters in my life to reflect on and share. And preparing myself for the new chapter ahead … something is coming … I’m re-dedicating myself to my mindfulness and meditation practices so I’m awake to the full range of the possibilities. There must be clearing for the new seeds to take root. The next year for me really begins in my birth month (June). So, I have 6 more months of this wonderful, juicy, unclear transition time. Then, we will see what seeds there will be to plant.

Anyone interested in charting their 9 or 7 year cycle (to see which one fits for you), please note … Year One is birth to one year old; year two is 1 year birthday anniversary to 2 and so forth. I was amazed to see how the 9 year cycle underpinned my life. Have fun.

    • Audrey – I love what you’ve shared here! Especially, “…wonderful, juicy, unclear transition time.” yes, Yes, YES! And I fully expect you to keep me posted on what unfurls and blossoms for you! Thank you, too, for providing the cycle information for the readers 🙂

  9. While moving ahead, the review mirror can remind us of things that we are leaving behind. It is good to remember where we are coming from, the distance we have covered, and the obstacles we have crossed, would often give us hope that we will get to where we are going. Progress is substantially hinged to faith. Lovely concept. I’m still looking ahead though. It’s nice of you to have shared.

  10. Hi,
How wonderful for you that you sold your commercial building, not an easy thing to do at the moment I imagine the way the economy is going around the world. Well done.
I look into the rear view mirror and I smile as I move on ahead. 🙂
I love your photo, that is just so unique, a beautiful shot.

    • Magsx2 – We’re glad for the sale of the building, too – especially in this economy. I’m glad you enjoyed the photo of Willa – she adores riding in the car with her head out the window 🙂

  11. I was thinking I might have a good view in my rear-view but instead I just slept away 2 full days in exhaustion. I thought we would be looking forward to building a retirement home and moving out of this exquisite energy efficient – fabulous view spot….I was hoping that WISE EARS would have a full calendar on Skype and Facetime also…and I thought I would be hired as a reviewer at $25 a book….no deal forth coming. With my husband starting the buyout-retirement process ( 5-7 years) I do know that we will have to be even more careful with our funds and that my husband really needs a project to focus on… The good news is that I really touched base with my inner joy a number of times in 2012…including paying off the Credit Card on the 31st….what a rush.
Just looking forward by leading an Epiphany Workshop on Sunday evening – can hardly wait to experience that evening of teaching and sharing my skills. May it foretell more to come.

I also keep looking at the lovely apple blossom painting that Terrill did and some angel sent to me – it is so beautiful and gives me such hope – now that was amazing and is front and center in my vision
Happy New Year all…may it be a blessing

    • Patricia – Having holiday company can definitely knock the stuffing out of a person, no matter how doggone delightful and helpful they are. One of my client’s husbands decided he didn’t like retirement as much as he though he would so he just started tutoring math and english. I wonder if something like this would be an option for you and/or your husband?

      • It will take 5 years for my husband to complete the buy out process in order to retire…so he is working 14 hour days right now. I put in 21 hours a week volunteering at our local schools….I was hoping WISE EARS would become a paid experience which included tutoring. I need to hire a marketer I think…my attempts are not working…just college friends who are teachers are making referrals sometimes right now…If I could teach the SATs or Graduate Record Exams…wow would I be busy….but with dyscalcula I am not able to do that…. We are starting 2013 in a limbo again…and I feel we need a plan and a few decisions – husband just want to go bicycling when he has time off… he is avoiding, avoiding and depressed right now….feeling old too….our energies are not much insync and it is feeling frustrating to me

  12. Laurie, congratulations to you and Len on the sale! And what a lovely watercolor of the building for posterity!

As of late my rearview mirrow has been attracting a lot of frost and ice. I’m thinking this will only be the beginning. Ha!

    Happy New year to all.

    • Sam – And your geographic location is typically colder than ours. Here in Crystal Lake, breathing outside with an uncovered mouth is like inhaling razor blades – absolutely wicked when the wind is whipping!

  13. Happy New Year, Laurie! What a thoughtful gift your friend gave you – a pleasant visual memory for your rear view mirror.

My rear view mirror shows the bumpy road of a lengthy struggle to balance child-elder-husband care-giving responsibilities. Who knows what lies ahead?

Best wishes as you move forward into your new endeavor!!!

  14. Hi Laurie! In my rear-view mirror is negativity – for 2013, I’m making a promise to remain positive. No matter how crazy the world gets. It’s how I view it and respond. Thanks for all your support in 2012. It means a lot to me. Deborah

  15. Well Laurie look what happens when I miss a post! I want to take a moment and thank that beautiful space for all that it offered you and the people you served over the years. I still miss one small place I had before this beautiful home I live in now. I like your mother’s words – travel light and travel fast. I would like to add that before heading out on the road, give thanks. Now I can say without reserve – congratulations! May the winds fill your sail.

  16. Lovely painting of the house. Thank you for visiting my blog. I just added a new post, if you’d like to come back. The news hasn’t been too cheery over the last few weeks and it has affected me profusely. I am hoping I can soon integrate some smiles and laughter, between the heaviness of sorrow and tears.
Reminds me of your 1st post- someone once told me to look in the rearview mirror, but not to stare. A good metaphor for life.
