Gemstone Affinities
Romantic Venus rules this charming sign. Not surprisingly, Librans are happiest in relationships. No wonder this is the sign of marriage and partnership. Peace and balance are the keynotes of Libra. This sign is concerned with beauty of all kinds. Ametrine (a natural mix of Amethyst and Citrine) promotes peace and harmony of mind, keeping Libra’s ever-important scales balanced. Supporting the qualities of morality, justice, and freedom, Amber particularly resonates with these Libran qualities. Softening the sometimes-judgmental side of this sign, Libra has a strong affinity with Citrine; it helps their energy to flow in a clean, structured, and balanced way.

The Moon of Falling Leaves (Sep 23 – Oct 22)
This period is one of calm and introspection. This is the time to slow down a little, time to enjoy the fruits of your labor, and time to turn to inner resources. The influence is one of appreciation.

Air Element
Libra is an air element—intelligent, communicative, sociable, versatile, and unpredictable. They bring intellect and a strong ability to communicate.

Energetic, friendly, and playful, talkative air signs may well be described as “Chatty Cathy.” Air shapes ideas. This is the world of intellectual perception and logical thought. Air is the element of discernment and analysis, of comment and dissection. It’s the mental element that thinks things through, but also has bright flashes of intuition. The air element is inventive and full of new ideas. Air signs need to express themselves, for this is the element of communication.

A Cardinal Sign
Libra is active, artistic, easygoing, and peaceable—prizing justice, beauty, and harmony above all things. Their reputation for indecisiveness stems from a desire to evaluate everything in an effort to make perfectly balanced judgements. Diplomatic, polished, and socially inclined, wise Librans withdraw periodically to recharge their personal batteries.

Zodiac Compatibility
Despising discord and confrontation, Librans innately strive for balance and serenity in any relationship, but they’re most compatible with Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.

Famous Librans
Barbara Walters (Sept 25), Susan Sarandon (Oct 4), and John Lennon (Oct 9).

Note: Libra is the only zodiac sign that’s represented by an inanimate object—scales.

  1. Laurie B is the only one I know… My Mother in law and Mother are coming up but we are not quite there yet.

My favorite boss ever was a Libra.

Interesting about the non animal symbol.
    Balance is so crucial
    Thanks….

  2. The Libra in my life that has been most influential is almost the mirror opposite but there is that phrase “I balance” and she is married for more than 50 years to a very easy-going, happy and social husband. Her communication is amply clear but most often non-verbal. And this part “Their reputation for indecisiveness stems from a desire to evaluate everything in an effort to make perfectly balanced judgements.” for a quick-deciding-even-if-it-is-wrong-sometimes person has drove us both to distraction over the years. Thank you as always Laurie for your contributions to my musings 🙂

    • Terrill – As a Libra myself, the “quick-deciding-even–if-it-is-wrong” is out of character for me, but I know many Libras who that’s spot on for! Interestingly, my mother swore I was a ten-month baby (she was glad I didn’t pop out with teeth and car keys). I do, in fact, resonate with a lot of the Virgo characteristics.

  3. My 81 year-old father is a Libra with a birthday of September 25th. My father is rather reserved, but still does have traits that include intelligence, the ability to communicate and an aire of diplomacy.

However, I must say he is notoriously indecisive, which you note here is prevalent for Libras. Not necessarily indecisive in a bad sense, but applicable nonetheless.

My brother Paul’s youngest of two daughters is also a Libra (October 6)

Laurie, I wish you and Len the best Christmas holiday ever, my very good friend!

  4. Hi,
I have met a few Libras, although I can’t say I know them very well, they seem very nice people, one Lady in particular is a very deep thinker, and seems to be able to find a solution to any problem. 🙂

    • Magsx2 – I’m sure glad for your visit today. Happy Holidays to YOU and YOURS “down under.” Being on the opposite of the globe, Santa should arrive in Brisbane about 17 hours before he arrives in the greater Chicagoland area.

  5. If I remember right my first husband was a Libra…not romantic, could not say he was balanced but expected everyone else to be balanced for him!!!!
He cheated on his first wife, not with me. But about 4 years after we married he cheated on me with neighbor across the street who was also married and I thought was my friend!!

However, the other people I know who are under the Libra sign they are wonderful people 🙂

    • Ann – Speaking as a Libra myself, please know that we’re not all like your first husband. I think I can safely say that the majority of us strive for balance and beauty. Although as with any of the Zodiac signs, there can be a few stinkers 🙂

      • So true. As I mentioned, the other people in my life who are Libras they are very nice and good people 🙂 By the way, I love the flower; they were Audrey Hepburn’s favorites.

  6. How lovely you get to see them frequently around your library. My favorite flowers have always been tulips, but I also like this one a lot as well. I love the simplicity and elegance of both.

  7. Laurie, I think you know that your birthday is one day before my daughter Missy’s. She is sharp as a tack, quick of the mark and has I wit that keeps me howling when I should just walk away. I find little in common between you and Missy other than the fact that you are both extremely intelligent and charming as can be. However, Missy is moody as March and I never know what to expect when I see her. And quite calculating as well. In her interactions with others, I am always careful to watch her eyes, when she gets that interested, innocent look in her eyes, I feel I should start warning people. She can build anything she sets her mind to and her mosaics are wonderful, I own 2 of them. But she is a fox, in every sense of the word.

    • Sandi – Your description of Missy has me grinning this morning. Eliminating the parts about moody, building, and mosaics, I read the comment to Len and asked him who this describes. He said, “You!” My mother’s totem was a red fox and every now and again I can feel two little pointed, furry ears trying to peek out from beneath my hair…Len would tell you they’re horns 🙂

  8. Hi Laurie! Have had best friends that are Libras about all my life long. I have Libra as my Rising Sign on my chart which could be where I get my thrust for balance and my screaming impatience for justice and fairness (protested Viet Nam war – many friends killed and it tore me up!). The picture of the calla lily is so perfectly serene – LOVE it!
    Holiday Hugs,
    Suzen

    • SuZen – “Scream impatience for justice and fairness” is a GREAT Libra descriptor! I photographed that calla lily in a woody section at the end of our street while walking our dogs. It was just begging for me to capture its regal pose.

  9. You forgot Groucho Marx and Jonathan! Yes, I live with a Libran. I read him your blog. He thinks it is him dead on . . . oy!

He definitely prizes peace above everything else — even when confrontation would be the best avenue. When you put him in a group of people, his mouth just runs until I poke him in the side and say “let someone else talk!” He knows how to play the diplomatic game for sure.

He is a good guy with enough Groucho to keep me laughing.

    • Barbara – Being a Libra myself, I’m in VERY good company with Groucho Marx and Jonathan 🙂 I love (and understand) when you said, “He definitely prizes peace above everything else — even when confrontation would be the best avenue). Merry Christmas to YOU and YOURS!
