Laurie picking up Ford F150 Super Cab

Laurie picking up Ford F150 Super Cab

I burned a great CD for left-lane driving as I make my way back home from Encinitas, California in the Ford F150 truck we just purchased from my dad. I also brought an assortment of books on CD—suspense novels—to keep me bright-eyed and bushy tailed.

I know the route I’m taking, but I don’t have a pre-determined set of stops; I’m driving by the seat of my pants—with GPS and road maps. Each morning before I hit the road I’ll take a photo of where I’m at and do a quick blog post so you can ride shotgun on this adventure. This morning we leave Barstow – in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.

  1. Laurie. Terrific collection of “Road Trip” songs. Could be a 2nd career… “Road Trip DC Coordinator” ! Are you a left lane-speedy passing driver? Hmmm. Enjoy… Safe journey home in your new truck!

  2. What a wonderful trip Laurie! It seems the perfect way to end the summer …. the road stretching out in front of you, great music, the wind in your hair (at least metaphorically!)

    Happy travels 🙂

  3. Oh nothing beats a road trip and in a new truck – wow…and with a GPS and music machine – it should be a true adventure…

Our cycling group just arrived and left Bend, Oregon back into the Mountain Passes and they are sending back some pictures for this week’s post on bikingarchitect.com

I can vacation right alone without doing all the pedaling or using up gas! Thanks

  4. I forgot to mention that if you took ’15’ to ’70’ and you are going thru Denver, I have a friend who lives south of Denver who’d be willing to ‘put you up for the evening’. Let me know Laurie.

  5. That is some vehicle. It looks massive and comfy.
    Good play list.
I’ve been doing the audio book thing lately – a lot on Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII and the dissolution of the monasteries – rawk n roll – but maybe that works on the smaller British roads.
However, I do believe your roads – regardless of how long, straight and empty they may be, are slower – lower speed limits – or are you permitted to do 70mph?

    • Cindy, Sheila, Jeff, Colleen, Alison, Terrill, Kim, Kathy, Patricia, and Paul THANK YOU ALL for you comments. I just stopped for the evening and I’m about to hit the sack. In the morning I’ll post my location with a few photographs of the BREATH TAKING scenery my eyes have been filling up on!

Most of where I traveled today was posted 75mph, but there were a few spots where it was actually posted at 80mph — that was a neat surprise!

      G’night all 🙂

  6. Hi, Laurie — a pick-em-up-truck! Great decision. I owned one for about ten years, moved from Texas to Maryland in it, and then had to retire it about 4 years ago. I still have the Texas license plates, though. I actually had them framed. They say “Texas Truck.”

That’s all that needs to be said . . .

  7. Incredible list of road songs that really set the tone for this unforgettable trip that I know you will reference many years into the future. Your subsequent reports have lived up to everything you promise here!
