Catch Me If You Can!

As you can see in the photograph, I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane (Peter, Paul, and Mary). I bought a one-way ticket that I’ll use this coming Monday. I’ve blacked out the destination details because those won’t be revealed until next week. Suffice it to say that I’m going on an adventure!

The Beginning of Laurie's Adventure

The Beginning of Laurie’s Adventure

Remember the 1987 comedy Planes, Trains, and Automobiles with Steve Martin and John Candy? I hope to avoid anything even remotely close to their maudlin escapades, and I’ll be minus the “trains” part except that Boogie Woogie Choo Choo Train is definitely one of the songs I’ve burned to take along for left-lane driving.

I’ll be On The Road Again (Willie Nelson) heading from the undisclosed destination, Back Home Again (John Denver). The purpose of my trip is to move something (it’s bigger than a breadbox) from Point A to Point B—Crystal Lake, Illinois.

I’m traveling by myself. In other words, I’ll be Footloose (minus Kevin Bacon) and sort of Thelma and Louise-ish (without Thelma, and no cliff diving at the end), having a fantastic time! Just call me Wild Thang!

Barring any complications, it should take me less than a week to accomplish this mission—I plan to be home in time for Labor Day weekend. On Tuesday morning I’ll reveal a few more details.

When was the last time you went on an adventure?

  1. Wow Laurie, that sounds like fun, heading out on an adventure, with a one way ticket no less. Then I thought about it and realised that each day is an adventure, no matter how well you plan you cant always predict the outcome. So I suppose you made me realise that I am on a one way ticket through life. Sitting back and enjoying the magical mystery tour…
    “bon voyage”
    Gil

  2. Laurie, I am very happy for you and very envious that I am not going on an adventure overseas. I have been going on an journey within myself and working to clear out some old programming.
I look forward to hearing about your adventures. I’m sure you will have some stories to tell!
    🙂 Karin

  3. I’m so excited for you. Were you afraid to take the trip…or did you run like a child with your arms flaying about? I’m going to send you a butterfly…when you see it know that it’s me thinking of you! Thank you for sharing, Delphine

    • Delphine – Welcome to Speaking from the Heart. I’m like the child running with my arms open wide to embrace this adventure. I’ll be on the lookout for the butterfly that you send. A grasshopper came to me this morning — when I looked up its metaphysical meaning I discovered that it’s “leaping forward.”

      • Well Laurie, I’m not sure if you have seen any butterflies but I sure have and each time I couldn’t help but smile and think of your adventure. You gave me a great idea to look-up the metaphysical meaning of butterfly and of course it would mean transformation but the best was the affirmation that Janet Robson of Darlington, Uk shares:

I recognize my true beauty within,
I value and cherish all that I am.
I have the power to transform my life.
        To experience true joy.

After three nights in a row of dreaming that I’m running in the dark this affirmation is exactly what I needed. Thanks! Delphine

  4. Oh how fun! I love the adventure sound of this. I am wondering if you are buying a new car–from far-far-away (like Montana? Washington? Northern California?) and driving it home. Last adventure on this end? Last week when going downstate to visit my parents with Kiah. EVERY downstate trip is an adventure. At one point we almost had our car towed. But the Universe got us over to our car minutes before it was to be towed, and we were fine. Can’t wait to hear more from you.

  5. You wild woman Laurie! 😉 Go get’em!!!!! Have fun and we shall catch up when you return.

I tend to take regular adventures – I think it is in my DNA… this last time I stuck my head in the clouds – and I have 14 good photographic reasons on Creative Potager for having your head in the clouds…. if you are interested of course:)

    • Terrill – I’m not surprised that we share the same “adventure gene.” You have a new post — about clouds — over at Creative Potager? Hmmmmmm, I didn’t receive an email notice. I’ll head over there to visit one of my favorite blog spots soon.

  6. Most recent adventure? Going to the shops today – no, wait, bear with me… Because I handed over shopping control to my nine-year-old and her friend. It was not a short trip. I met someone who used to live next door to the groom at the wedding I’m attending tomorrow. Revelations emerged. Chocolate custard made its way to the trolley instead of soap. The self-service checkout broke down at least ten times. Then we met a large beautiful parrot eating a Kit-Kat. It was perched on the arm of a chair.

Next adventure? Someone I’ve never met is turning up in the middle of the night in a camper van from Antwerp – a old friend of the bride at tomorrow’s wedding. If they get here early enough they can have a bed – otherwise they can sleep in the van and come in for breakfast. I had thought it completely normal to offer a bed for a couple of nights to a foreign friend of a friend, but everyone who has heard and voiced an opinion so far thinks it’s odd. Is it?

    • Paul – You went shopping with a female. A 9-year-old female. And her friend. Right there my hat goes off to you — you must have the patience of a saint. On top of all that you met a Kit-Kat eating parrot. And now you’ve got a stranger camping in your yard. There’s buckets of writing material right there!

    • Paul – Thank you for the well wishes. And the blacking out didn’t work? Oh, great! Well hopefully my ticket won’t be used by someone before I have a chance to use it myself on Monday 🙂

  7. “She’s leaving home after living alone for so many years…”

Hardly applicable to your situation and persona Laurie, but this melancholic Beatles song from the “Sgt. Pepper” album entered my mind when I read all your wonderful references to travel songs in your engaging lead-in. Love the Willie Nelson and John Denver choice and all those nifty film titles! Ha! Don’t blame you for holding back on the destination and the item, as heck, they’ll spoil the follow-up post. I’m most intrigued.

Ha! I just went on an “adventure” this past Tuesday night in Manhattan with the entire family and it was quite a unique one. But it didn’t come cheap. We all attended the “Harry Potter Exibition” on 44th Street, which is basically a two floor Harry Potter museum with stuffed exhibits, light shows, television monitor screens, games, Potter related displays, and an incredible gift shop. The trip was originally planned as a gift for 14 year-old Sammy for graduating with honors, (and heck he might be the most impassioned Potter fan of our brood) but was subsequently offered to the entire family, because of the unanimous enthusiasm for teh venture.

    • Sam – As a Harry Potter fan myself, I can well imagine that your entire clan had a BLAST at the Harry Potter Exibition (and I can further imagine the exorbitant cost involved!). Graduating with honors — by hat is off to young Sammy 🙂

  8. Wow Laurie, I was just contemplating taking the weekend off and making it long, but the veggies are piling up and I just have a great deal to do…including a book review for Labor Day…

Have fun! Adventure sounds just about right!

  9. I love adventures! How fun for you. I am guessing you’ll be “riding along in your automobile” as you get “on the road again” and start “surfin’ USA” you “California girl”. Miss you. Hope to see you soon after your return.

  10. Now what a minute….I was off this week……pout…..

I say you are going to visit a fellow blogger…..apparently in another country, as you will be driving in the left lane?

I am thinking of the Mary Tyler Moore Show and how she teased her weatherman Ted Baxter, not sure why……

Speaking of that show, I am safely on my little adventure alone….in the hotel in Saint Paul Minnesota.

Wedding, Dog Show, State Fair, visiting friends and family are on the agenda….
Along with taking a few walks around downtown here and visiting the Cathedral to light a huge candle for my mom on her birthday Saturday, and another one for my son Joe.

  11. Sounds exciting and intriguing! Looking forward to the details!

A couple of years ago we went to Shenandoah National Park and hiked and hiked and crossed paths with a bear and many deer. I was ecstatic!

  12. I’m sorry I came so late to the party. It couldn’t be helped, I had to crawl away from my computer as I need to go on my own adventure — all the way to a big sister island (Salt Spring Island).
I just love mysteries –I’ll definately be here Tuesday.
What I don’t like is that you hinted at left hand driving which indicates England not Canada. Hmph, what are we chopped liver? : )
And, if England is your destination, I am so jealous… well… words escape me. But I probably will get over it. Especially if you promise to take me with you–virtually.
    All the best.

  13. Hi, Laurie — sorry I am so late to this little party. I love the way you attached your comings and goings (although in this case, it seems to be more goings and then comings) to song. The music you listed is so relevant to our culture, our history, and it keeps hanging around! I love adventure and think that my last great adventure had to be 14 years ago when I moved 2000 miles across the country to take a job here with the federal government. My next adventure actually starts in the spring of 2012: I will be entering my clinical phase for my pastoral counseling/spiritual care degree. How I will make that work, I don’t know, but I am really open for the Universe to help me create that path.

    • Barbara – You’re never late to Speaking from the Heart; it’s always the right time. Your 2000 mile move across the country what a courageous adventure, indeed. One that has served you well!

It’s going to be a privilege to watch from the sidelines as you enter the clinical phase for your pastoral counseling/spiritual care degree. You’ve always struck me as someone who excels at “Satsang” — holding a space for truth; someone who practices sacred listening.
