Recently I found a brown-paper wrapped package in our mailbox. The return address indicated that it was from my friend Terrill Welch—the inspirational force behind Creative Potager.
Gingerly cutting away the outside wrapping, I discovered a decal-decorated inner package with the following handwritten messages:
Precious cargo
Caution—contains addictive substance
Handle with care
There is no going back
Open carefully
Ever so cautiously I removed the inner wrapping and much to my delight discovered two boxes of PANDA All Natural Raspberry Licorice.
For those of you who’ve known me for any length of time, you’re aware that the ensuing cartwheels and Snoopy Happy Dance were a spontaneously-combusted result of red licorice being my all-time favorite decadent indulgence!

Macadamia nut brittle. It is not readily available but if I see it I cannot resist!
much love
Gil
Gil – Ohhhhhhhhhh, that does sound decadent 🙂
Sweet tooth, did you say, Laurie!? Oh, gosh, my list is endless. But at the top of that list would be cherry or apple pie. Enjoy that gift! With heart, Daisy
Daisy – Have you tried apple pie with cinnamon ice cream? Ohhhhhhhhh my gosh — it’s an unbeatable combination! (not that I would know from personal experience, you understand)…
Pomegranate Sorbet – can almost never find it, but when I do I indulge in a whole pint – slowly
I love the lovely black licorace toffees that my father used to bring my mum from England – now we can not find them anywhere. They do not contain corn syrup – maybe that is why I love them so much….my children are licorice addicts I am afraid my mum taught them to just love it.
Great post 🙂 Oh that Terrill
Patricia – That sounds scrumptious! I’m going to have to do some Google searching to see if I can find it. In Lake Geneva there’s a store that carries watermelon sherbert, I’m going to start my sleuthing there!
System? There’s a system for this stuff????!!
Ooops – wrong blog entry!
Barbara – I’m still laughing!!! 🙂
Okay, here’s the right entry:
Ice cream.
All flavors.
Any flavors.
Three scoops, please.
Barbara – If you were stuck on a deserted island and were limited to just ONE flavor of ice cream for the duration, what flavor would it be?
Chocolate!

A package from Mayne Island will always be one to cherish, but this particular parcel from Terrill brought a smile to my face for sure! Licorice is definitely a favorite ‘sweet tooth’ food, though oddly enough I was never much of a fan. Since I reformed my diet the sweetest I go these days are blueberries, strawberries, apples, raisins and dried fruits, as well as some yogurt. But certainly for a very long time I had my share of ice cream, chocolate, pastries and napoleons. As far as the question to Barbara goes I’d go with vanilla as my favorite ice cream flavor, though that’s about as plain an answer as I could give. Ha!
Sam – The fruits you named are delicious to be sure and can certainly satisfy the sweetest of sweet tooths!
Vanilla ice cream?! As odd as it may seem surveys reveal that it’s the NUMBER ONE flavor favorite of most people in the US.
Laurie I have been trying to get by all morning to tell you how much fun I had wrapping and sending you this parcel with both of our favourite treat. Chocolate is a close second though. Actually anything sweet though I am trying to follow Sam’s example and go the route of fruit and berries. This time of year that is not a hardship. Enjoy!
Terrill – My friend Karen Wylie told me she saw a refrigerator magnet that said, “The answer is chocolate — who cares what the question is!” Like Sam, I do the fruit thing as a rule so that I can enjoy an exception every now and again 🙂
Oh Laurie, I so love the ‘new spin’ on my father’s most favorite quewtion to me from the age 5 – ‘what’s black and white and read all over’ – ‘THE NEWSPAPER’ he’d shout as I pondered the question, KNOWING there just had to be a different answer. . .thank you so much for answering that question for me (and just for the record. . . I too LOVE the Panda brand of licorice:)
Alison – I’m so glad you enjoyed this post and it stirred some fun memories of your dad 🙂
Oh I am so jealous, I might even drive over to get a piece!
I like CHOCOLATE……and butterscotch pudding!
I also thought of lots of hugs and kisses, as that is so lacking right now….
Hugs
Kim
Kim – I haven’t even though about butterscotch pudding for years. Hmmmmmmm, we’ll have to remedy that this winter (not sure why, but I think of pudding as a winter food).
How fun that Terrill sent this to you! Is it thrilling receiving a mystery gift in the mail? (I got one from a blog reader maybe the same day–not quite so “sweet”–but incredibly sweet nonetheless! Maybe will have to post a blog picture to share tomorrow.) Enjoy your licorice to the last bit!
Kathy – Now you’ve piqued my curiosity. Yes, please post a photo of the gift that recently found its way to your mailbox 🙂
Handwritten messages and a lovely butterfly motif, too! ‘Twas your lucky day – how sweet of Terrill!
Dark chocolate is my indulgence…
Another refrigerator magnet says: “Save the Earth! It’s the only planet with chocolate!”
Barbara – You and Len would get along well than with dark chocolate is your indulgence. Ohhhhh, I love the magnet saying that you shared here 🙂
I wouldn’t have guessed what it was. I had a lot of things running in my mind but nothing came close to what was inside the package. The licorice looks delicious. great post.
The Island Traveler – Thank you for visiting Speaking from the Heart. You can trust me when I say, the locirice tastes as delicious as it looks 🙂
That’s the sort of warning I’d like on my book – dangerous, contains addictive substance.
Lots of delightful temptations listed above me here. I’ll go for freshly squeezed passion fruit juice – but I’m safe from addiction, because I’ve only ever had it at roadside stalls in far off Venezuela.
Paul – Wouldn’t that be a great “warning” on a book jacket! I’ve never had freshly squeezed passion fruit juice, but it sounds fantastic! More so, a trip to Venezuela!

Hi Laurie, and Happy Monday to you. I’m smiling at the thought of you doing your Snoopy Happy Dance. Rick also does a very fine version of it for our grandkids. As for favorite sweet treat indulgence, that would have to be Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream. Yum!
Colleen – Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Gracia ice cream — it’s tough to beat that!
Chocolate, especially home-made German Chocolate Cake.
Miniature Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bars too !!
Deb – German Chocolate Cake is Len’s to-die-for favorite!
Geezes ! How did I missed this one! I thought of you the other day when I was in the Dollar Store and their featured item was Twisler’s ! Oy.
Right now my favorite sweet is ice cream! Any flavor will do!
Jeff – You’re among good company with ice cream lovers. If you were stuck on a desert island for one month and could have as much ice cream as you wanted, but it HAD to be the same flavor over and over, what flavor would you choose?
Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia!!! Of course!
Jeff – Of course 🙂
What a lovely surprise. I LOVE ice cream 🙂
Ann – It was, indeed, a lovely surprise 🙂
