Master Numbers – An Overview
In Numerology, most numbers are reduced to a single digit number 1-9. There are three numbers that are exceptions to this rule—they’re known as Master Numbers.

Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33 are more intense versions of the single-digit numbers they replce—2, 4, and 6 respectively. People born under these vibrations have stronger learning patterns from birth, and at times—when they’re aware of their full potential—can lead extraordinary lives. It’s a matter of choice; of free will.

These three numbers are called Master Numbers because they have a higher vibration than the other numbers. They’re highly charged, difficult to handle, and require time, maturity, and great effort to integrate into one’s personality.

For those of you who’ve been following along in the Numerically Speaking series, you’ll remember that the Life Path number is derived from your full date of birth. There’s more than one way the math can be done. Let’s use Jackie Kennedy’s date of birth – July 28, 1929 – to show our work:

July is the seventh month—7
The day 28, 2+8 equals 10 which reduces [1+0] to 1
The year 1+9+2+9 equals 21 which reduces [2+1] to 3

Now add the month, day, and year together 7 + 1 + 3 = 11 and you have your Life Path Number. In this case, 11—one of the three Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33—doesn’t get reduced any further. All other numbers are reduced to a single digit between 1 and 9.

11—The Master Dreamer
The number 11 represents vision. It’s the most intuitive of all numbers.

The Master Number 11 is a dreamer. The 11 represents illumination—a channel to the subconscious, insight without rational thought, and sensitivity, nervous energy, shyness, and impracticality. The 11 has all the aspects of the 2, enhanced and charged with charisma, leadership, and inspiration. It’s a number with inborn duality, which creates dynamism, inner-conflict, and other catalyzes with its mere presence.

22—The Master Builder
The number 22 combines vision and action. It’s the most powerful of all numbers.

The Master Number 22 is a builder. The 22 can turn the most ambitious of dreams into reality. It’s potentially the most successful of all numbers. It has many of the inspirational insights of the 11, combined with the practicality and methodical nature of the 4. It’s unlimited, yet disciplined. It has big ideas, great plans, idealism, leadership, and enormous self-confidence.

33—The Master Teacher
The number 33 offers guidance to the world. It’s the rarest and most influential of all numbers.

The Master Number 33 is a teacher. The 33 combines the 11 and the 22 and brings their potential to another level. When expressed to the fullest, the 33 lacks all personal ambition, and instead focuses its considerable abilities toward the spiritual uplifting of mankind. What makes the 33 especially impressive, is the high level of sincere devotion. This is shown in its determination to seek understanding and wisdom before preaching to others. The 33 in full force is extremely rare.

Over the next three posts, we’ll take a closer look at each of the Master Numbers.

In showcasing Life Path numbers 1-9, I used simple, subdued photographs that I took during my 2010 year-end visit to southern California. In keeping with the beach theme, you’ll notice that for the Master Numbers—magnified Life Paths 2, 4, and 6—I’m using very bright, vivid photographs that I took almost a year ago when Len and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary on Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas.

    • Terrill – I’m glad for your visit today. I haven’t made it back to Creative Potager to tell you thank you for the heart-warming response you wrote to me the other day. It meant a lot, thank you.

  1. Hello, my birthday is 11/22/1968 and I was wondering if the 11 and 22 mean anything on their own. I realize that when I add in the year I am a 3 but when I was reading about 11 and 22, I was curious if there was any meaning in the day and month numbers on their own.

    Thanks,
    Tammy

    • Tammy – I’m so glad you found Speaking from the Heart. Welcome! With a birth date of November 22, 1968 you are a Life Path 3.

There are so many different types of numbers in numerology: destiny, personal year, specific month, birth date significance, individual day, triple cycles, name expression, consonant expression, total name expression, personality detection, missing links and so on. The purpose of this particular series that I’m presenting — Numerically Speaking — is to teach readers how to calculate their Life Path number and then understand what that means. However, if you send me a direct email (Laurie@HolEssence.com), I will be happy to reply with what your particular month (11) and day of the month (22) mean.

  2. Hi Laurie,

Haven’t touched base in a while so Hola Chica! I trust that all is well.

Like you, I have found numerology to be useful in assisting people to understand some of their basic tendencies, aversions and attractions. I really like Dan Milman’s book The Life You were Born to Live.

    33/6

    • Bob – Thank you for stopping by Speaking from the Heart – it’s good to hear from you! So you’re a 33/6. I’m sure you’re well versed in what that means, but if you stop by again next week, I’ll post my take on it. How’s that Arizona weather treating you?

    • Leanne – You bring up an excellent point about Master Number compatibility:

Master Number 11 people are compatible with the same people that Life Path 2’s are compatible with.
Master Number 22 people are compatible with the same people that Life Path 4’s are compatible with.
Master Number 33 people are compatible with the same people that Life Path 6’s are compatible with.

From a metaphysical point of view, the repetition of 11’s is huge! There’s not enough time/space for me to go into it here, but know this — it’s positive, uplifting, constructive, and healing. I always welcome 11’s and double 11’s (like 11:11 am and pm on a digital clock).

  3. Well, this certainly complicates, while still enriching the general discussion. When you started this project I was a skeptic, but as mach of it hit the bulls-eye, I see both worth and fascination, while appreciating the self-reflection aimed at modest reform. I also greatly look forward to those photographs!

    • Sam – Your statement, “Well, this certainly complicates, while still enriching the general discussion” makes me laugh because it reminds me of when I was about to become a mom. My iown mom said, “Being a parent is the best and worst thing that will ever happen to you.” At the time I didn’t understand what she meant. Having walked a mile in those shoes for 27 years now, I’ve got a clue 🙂 I’m glad you stopped by – thank you.

  4. So interesting, Laurie, And loved the photo. Oh my, so lovely. Makes me wish a bit … even though I’ve given up “wanting” per the ever-wise E. Tolle!

Have a nice day & thanks for stopping by SunnyRoomStudio. Means a lot to have you drop by. My best, Daisy

    • Daisy – I’m so glad you enjoy the photograph in this post. The water (on that side of the island) was that exact color of light blue for as far as the eye could see. The water on the other side of the island was deep sapphire blue for as far as the eye could see. It was amazing!

Readers – It’s always a pleasure to visit SunnyRoomStudio, that’s why I have it conveniently listed in my Blog Roll on the right-hand side of your screen. I encourage you to go take a peek. I guarantee you’ll like what you find be warmly welcomed.

  5. Good thing Barry is in the newspaper business! He’s a master teacher for many folks, that’s for sure. Now here’s my question. Do you think those of us with ordinary numbers can be Master Teachers, Dreamers, Builders? Are there ways in which we can grow past our life paths into something which is larger, which encompasses other numbers?

    • Kathy – You bet your bottom dollar I think that any one of us — by intent — can determine to be a master anything we want. My perspective is that if you see something you admire in another number, than determine to incorporate that very thing in your own life. It’s a matter of choice — remember, even the folks who have the master numbers naturally in their charts have to determine to live on the sunny side (as opposed to the shadow side).

The characteristics of our Life Path numbers are not set in stone; they’re what we have a “bent” toward.

  6. It’s been an unusual winter season Laurie. We’ve had a few days in the eighties and a couple mornings in the twenties, but all in all it’s been pleasant. At present I’m making plans to spend some time writing near the beach this summer …good bye 115 and hello 80’s!

Yes, I am familiar with the 33/6 life path, but look forward to reading your take on it.

  7. Master numbers! Cool! And perplexing. Here I have Missy, a 22, and she makes me want to pull my hair out on the days I’m not absolutely loving her company. Then there is my brother David, who seems to be the very epitome of a 22. He set his sights on his career and travels as a very young man, stuck with it, and has had wonderful success in doing most of what he planned as a teen-ager. This is amazing information!

  8. Laurie ~ Thank you for this gift. Each # is so true of the characteristics you have imprinted in each of our hearts. I was happy to see my 11 blogged about which describes a lot of what i have journeyed thru to date.

Often times we are faced with situations and events in our lives which seem to defy logic and reason, and we struggle to come to terms with the inner struggle. Nothing in life happens by chance, there is order within our inner and outer worlds. It may seem like organized chaos more often than not, but all seems to be following a set path, a groove in the cosmic fabric. The little groove you etched away at in your mind setting the wheels in motion of what your reality now manifests in front of you.

The following is a fabulous piece by Kahil Gibran one of my favorite poets, so in the words of Kahil Gibran…

    Reason and Passion

“And the priestess spoke again and said:

“Speak to us of Reason and Passion.”

    And he answered saying:

Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your judgment wage war against passion and your appetite.

Would that I could be the peacemaker in your soul, that I might turn the discord and the rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.

But how shall I, unless you yourselves be also the peacemakers, nay, the lovers of all your elements?

Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul.

If either your sails or our rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.

For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction.

    Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion; that it may sing;

And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.

I would have you consider your judgment and your appetite even as you would two loved guests in your house.

Surely you would not honor one guest above the other; for he who is more mindful of one loses the love and the faith of both.

Among the hills, when you sit in the cool shade of the white poplars, sharing the peace and serenity of distant fields and meadows – then let your heart say in silence, “God rests in reason.”

And when the storm comes, and the mighty wind shakes the forest, and thunder and lightning proclaim the majesty of the sky, – then let your heart say in awe, “God moves in passion.”

And since you are a breath In God’s sphere, and a leaf in God’s forest, you too should rest in reason and move in passion.”

  10. Kathy, your “Reason and Passion” story is a gift from the Universe this morning! Do you mind if I borrow it for my blog? It speaks so succinctly to everything I have been pondering lately. (If I don’t hear back from you through Laurie’s comments, I’ll search for you on Facebook to ask again.) Thank you so much, so very much, from the bottom of my heart. Love, the other Kathy

  11. Hi Kathy D… 🙂 I’d be honored to share and pass it forward. I will come read your blog. I enjoy your amazing writing.

Laurie… I see we just celebrated Valentines day & want to let you know that Listen with your heart, [http://www.holessence.com/listenwithyourheart.html] was on my mind all day. You bring us such heart.

  12. Dear Madam,

I am Randhir Gaikwad from India. On 27th January 2012 our family was blessed
with baby boy, and we are in process of giving him good name.

We had finalize a name but unable to decide as what should be the spelling
of his name. Details of our new born is as follows.

    Date of Birth – 27th January 2012
    Surname – Gaikwad

Decided name ” Kapish ” but should we name it as ” Kapish ” of Kaapish ”

Request you to please help us in deciding the name.

    Thanks

    Randhir Gaikwad

    • Randhir – Congratulations on the birth of your son! A person’s Life Path number is based on their date of birth. Your son (regardless of his name) is a wonderful Life Path 6 — the path of the teacher. “Destiny” number (also known as “Expression” number) is based on a person’s name. If you name your son Kaapish Gaikwad (first name with two a’s) his destiny number will be 4. Here’s a bit of information for you:

      NUMBER 4 DESTINY
You’re determined of mind and movement and easily get into the swing of things. Proud and patriotic, you always toe the line and make a good showing of yourself. As steady as the beat of 4/4 time, so is the beat of your reasoning and personal character rhythm.

You’re the eternal builder in everything you do, in your profession, social activities and home life. One by one, every brick of your life will be fitted into place with as much care and consideration as if you were building a house. There’s no such thing as your being slipshod and thoughtless in these matters, for it would go against your grain. Therefore, you family will always feel secure and content in the knowledge that you’ve everything all worked out as accurately and sensibly as is possible.

Honesty and fair play are extremely important to you and you insist on it for all humanity, not just for yourself alone. You’re know to family, friends and employer as the “Rock of Gibraltar”—you can always be relied upon for good honest opinions and dedicated work.

Far too practical to be a daydreamer, you most likely will not go wandering off around the world in search of romance or adventure, preferring to settle down into a secure, comfortable niche that you carve out for yourself, where you know exactly what to expect and when. No speculation for you.

You know better than anyone that nothing in life is attained without hard work and are conditioned from early on not to expect any more than what you work for. You reap only what you sow, so you concentrate on reality rather than counting on good luck.

Preoccupation with order and organization should not preclude your taking time off to commune quietly with yourself and go over your current endeavors to sort out those that can be weeded out, thus concentrating your strong powers on those that perhaps need more effort.

To rebel against the restricting expression of your number would be unwise, making things extremely uncomfortable and difficult for you. Then nothing will go right, no matter how much effort you expend. Worrying about it will accomplish nothing and will only serve to depress you. You cannot afford the detrimental effects of jealousy and narrow-mindedness, so it would be wise to be grateful for all you have and envy no one.

When you accept the destiny of your Name Expression and live by it, you will be privileged to sit on high and savor the contentment and happiness you’ve earned.

  13. Firstly, this is a wonderfully written website/blog about numerology! Kudos, Laurie, for putting it together and being succinct with your words. Now, for the longest time, I thought I was a “Master Number 22” being that my birthday is 1-22-1988. I was under the impression that the date was “your number.” I do, however, understand that my life path is 4. But now I followed your example calculation above in the ‘Master Number – An Overview’ section, and come up with 9 by adding Jan. being 1, 2+2=4, and 1+9+8+8=22=2+2=4. I keep seeing different calculations, and I recall coming up with 22 in the past. Please, if you have the time to clarify, you will make my month and over thrill me by the power of the internet! =] Thank you very much.

  14. Hi, I was born on 22/12/1979. My life path number is 33. My birth day contains another master number 22. Please share your inputs.

  15. Oh dear, I wonder if my Life Path and Master Number antennae got broken along my path due to external circumstances? I am blessed with many wonderful talents and all the nurturing aspects spoken of, but I can’t seem to get work, even in a field I excel at and have a shining resume for. I have been holding out hope that the tide would turn before I get my car repossessed, and can no longer feed my child! I always had a clear vision, since childhood, of my success, but have had to process and forgive a life of abuse that I no longer want to be a victim of! Now I am 45, I have no stability financially, and can barely pay my bills. I am willing take a different job doing anything that will give me self-sufficiency and benefits, even if it means giving up a career that I LOVE, and that I am very good at. What can I do to find my place?!
Thank you for your wonderful blogsite! I just stumbled upon it, but clearly not by mistake! 😉

    • Valerie – Not to minimize anything that you shared…

The first thing that came to mind when I read your comment was Dr. Wayne Dyer’s quote: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

  16. Hi Laurie! what a wonderful blog, so very interesting, thank you! I was wondering if you could help clarify..my sister’s birthdate is 03/25/1981 which adds up 3+2+5+1+9+8+1=29 so reduced 2+9 is 11…is she indeed an 11?

  17. Dear Mam,

Please send the details of Numerology on my Date of Birth(13/Sept/1971

  18. Hi Laurie,
I am very new to numerology my birthday is 07/04/1984 so if I did my math correctly I am a life path 6 with a master number of 33. Which from I read is pretty rare I was wondering how rare? From what I read it does tend to decribe me to a T, down to the lack of ambition, but glad to say I that at 28 that is beginning to resolve itself, due to my sheer desire and feeling to fullfill something much greater that I belive that is in me that I have no idea how to explain just this overarching knowing that I meant to do something great, which again is described in my numbers. I still struggle with the ambition and fear of failure part I was wondering if there are certain things/practises you can do to get the “33” master number rolling. I do meditate, not regularly but occasionally. Just looking for some advice. Greatly appreciated. Much love and peace.

    • Nancy-Alex – Yes, you did the math correctly. You asked two questions: How rare is a 33, and what can you do to get the 33 ball rolling.

There are fewer people who are Master Numbers (11, 22, and 33), but how many fewer I don’t really know. When I teach large, in-person classes of numerology, I might have a Master Number 11 or 22, but 33’s are even fewer and far between.

To get the ball rolling…you may want to try yoga, Qigong, or tai chi (I’m a tai chi fan myself). Each of these is what I would describe as a form of moving meditation. And they address the whole person – body, mind, and spirit.

  19. Hi Laurie, I have been told multiple times that I am an Eleven and frankly I do identify with this LifePath in may ways. Ive also been called a 2 LifePath, and I relate to it as well, lol! Which do you say I am? November 8, 1963?

      • Hi Laurie! Thank you for your reply! Please tell me how do you add the digits for my birthday to get the 11 LP and why do some say 2 LP instead?

      • Chardy – The answer is a bit lengthy to respond to in this format. I will, however, send an answer directly to your email address at the end of my work day today.

  20. Excuse me, i tried your numerology math and i found out that i’m heavy influenced by the number 11. I added up my name letters and the result is 11 samething if i added up my birthday which is 3/28/1996. I got all kind of traits that you described in your article, highly emotional, anxiety,…i also meet other traits which described number 11 in articles from other websites. My question is if both of my name and b-day date all added up in 11, does it mean that i’ll be twice influenced by this number and is it possible to add all those two 11s into 22??? Thank you for your time, i hope you answer me by email soon.

  21. I have a question about life path and compatibility between them…my life path is 7 and hers is 11…what is our mission and how does this ends? just a little bit of help from you can give me maybe a clue 🙂

    • Merkhaba – It would be very presumptuous of me to try to tell you your mission in life. I can tell you, however, that the answer resides inside of you — it’s already there. Your job, is to discover it. As to revealing how the story ends…

…that would be like reading the last chapter of a book first. No fun at all.

  22. Hi my birth date is june 2nd 1985 and i think my life path number is 22. i feel so motivated knowing all the great things about this powerful master number. i have so many feelings inside me and i some times am not sure where to begin.. i have no idea where i stand my career wise all my friends are well settled and i feel guilty and want to punish myself by working really hard but its as if nothings in my control or is it? by the way your blog is really something i really appreciate your efforts thank you for bringing so life in my life at this needed moment.

  23. hi again,
i’m not truly sure if my number adds up to 22 but i’m really interested to know. thanks again.
    cheers

  24. My birthday is 9/19/1974 and my life path is 4 and also associated with Master 22 if I’m not mistaken. Do you have any suggestions of how to truly tap into the gifts of Master 22. I can identify with everything said of 4 and 22, but I feel like I’m not at my full potential.

    • Kinya – The answer lies within you. It’s located where your emotions and thoughts (how you feel and what you think) intersect. And while that sounds simple, it’s not easy.

It’s a place you have to access. Once there, you need to just BE — to sit with it a while. And when you listen carefully, you’ll hear the answer.

  25. Dear Madam

My DOB is 27 may 1970 and my wife was born on 29 may 1977. Do we have same lifepath? We feel restless and are not content with our present position, we both are teachers. Several times we plan big but hesitate to work. Let us know about compatibility of ours and also guide us what to do with our unusual and big ideas?

    • Vijendra – Based on the information you provided, both you and your wife are Life Path 4’s.

As to compatibility — The Life Path 4 person has a natural fit with Life Paths 2, 4, and 8. They get along well with Life Paths 6 and 7. But they find a challenge (or need to compromise) with Life Paths 1, 3, 5, and 9.

Remember: “Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.” In other words, if there’s something about your relationship you don’t care for, it’s up to each of you to take positive action steps to change it.

  26. Isn’t it lifepath 22? (may 27, 1970)
    May= 5
    27= 2+7= 9
    1970= 1+9+7+0= 17= 1+7= 8
    5+9+8=22
And also for may 29, 1977
    May= 5
    29=2+9= 11
    1977=1+9+7+7=24= 2+4= 6
    5+11+6= 22

The lifepath indicates 4 or 22?

    • I’m a Pythagorean Numerologist. In Pythagorean Numerology:

      YOU: 05+27+1970=2002. Reduced 2+2=4
      WIFE: 05+29_1977=2011. Reduced 2+1+1=4

      A Life Path 4 doesn’t always = Master Number 22
However, a Master Number 22 will always also be a Life Path 4.

  27. Hello,

Well I joined this site today only and I like it immensely. The language and compassion with which the blogs are written is astounding. Would you please guide me a bit in this regard?
The date of birth is Oct.25th 1955,hence the life path number comes to 1. But seen number 7 played quite an important role, besides being lucky,in life.Could there be some link?

    Surajit Patnaik.

    • Surajit – Somewhat like the Zodiac signs, we can see wisps of ourselves in each of them. Likewise with Life Path numbers. I’m a Life Path 5, but resonate with pieces of many of the other numbers.

  28. Hi, I have gone through your blog very first time and it seems interesting to me.
But I have one question, my birth date is Feb, 3 1986 when I count Life path in two different ways now I am confused which one is correct.

    1st )
    3 + 2 + (1 + 9 + 8 + 6)
    = 3 + 2 + (2+4)
    = 3 + 2 + 6
    = 11 (Master Number)
    = 1 + 1
    = 2
    AND
    2nd )
    (3 + 2 + 1986) = 1991 = 20 = 2

Can you please refer your which post Should I refer ?

    • Nipesh – You are a Master Number 11. Please remember that a Master Number 11 ALSO has all of the characteristics of a 2. (Just as a Master Number 22 also has the characteristics of a 4, and a Master Number 33 also has the characteristics of a 6).

  29. Hello I have recently been intordues to numerology, and DOB is 05/29/1989
I concluded that I’m a 7. Later I came across additional information that if your (m+m) , (d+d), or (y+y+y+y) = 11, or 22 that gives you 2 path numbers is that correct? On my (d+d)= 11 and I did the math on days 1-31 and 2+9 is the only equation that can add up to 11. Please let me know if this is accurated or if I disected this a lil to far. Lol if this is accurate than that makes me an 7/11?

    • Curiosity — All Master Numbers have the additional propensities of the following Life Path Numbers:
Master Number 11 – additionally shares the characteristics of Life Path 2
Master Number 22 – additionally shares the characteristics of Life Path 4
Master Number 33 – additionally shares the characteristics of Life Path 6

HOWEVER (and this is important), not all Life Path numbers (including 2, 4, and 6) automatically share characteristics of Master Numbers. It is only true is the person is a Master Number first and foremost.

  30. My birth name was Brijendra Pal. So was in the academic record till class 10th. But in class 10th exam my class teacher spelt it Vijendra Pal , and after that it remains vijendra pal everywhere. My services record, bank and other all document are with the name Vijendra Pal. What name should be used in numerology calculations.?
