LIFE PATH 9
The Path of the Humanitarian

If you missed the post on how to calculate your Life Path number, simply click HERE.

A 9 Life Path is the sum total of all the other numbers. Therefore, it carries all of the same attributes and negatives attendant to each, making your energy highly charged in every way.

You’re utopian. You spend your life trying to realize some aspect of your utopian dream—sacrificing money, time, and energy for a better world. It’s in giving that you find much satisfaction. You have a broad outlook on life. You tend to see the big picture, rather than the minute details. The person with a 9 Life Path is rarely prejudiced or accepts social biases of people. Instead, they evaluate people on the basis of what they can do for—contribute to—the larger cause.

You have a healthy imagination and are extremely creative, especially at harmoniously arranging the beauty already potential in the environment. These abilities can lead you into fields such as interior decorating, landscape art, and photography. But because of your strong social consciousness, you can be an effective politician, lawyer, judge, minister, teacher, healer, or environmentalist. Vocations that require self-sacrifice and have a clear positive social impact are common among 9s.

You’re often disappointed by the realities of life, the shortcomings of others, or of yourself. You don’t want to accept the imperfections of the world, a feeling that drives you constantly to try to improve upon it. Rather than being satisfied with your efforts, and those of others, you relentlessly push on, striving for even greater accomplishments.

A key to your personality is the necessity of sacrifice. One of your lessons is learning to let go of material possessions and relationships; learning that holding on too tightly to anything causes pain. The most successful and satisfying road for a Life Path 9 is giving, sharing, and sacrificing for a larger goal without expecting anything in return.

Doing for others is one of your finest characteristics, and you derive extreme pleasure from knowing that you were able to help in some way. If you’re a 9 with financial means, you’d do well to tie your personal fortunes to an endeavor that makes the world a better place for others. Very often, this turns into a highly successful and lucrative enterprise. Your life rests on the axiom that the more one gives, the larger the reward.

The Life Path 9 suggests that you entered this plane with an abundance of dramatic feelings coupled with a strong sense of compassion and generosity. The key to the nature of a Life Path number 9 is found in their humanitarian attitude. The 9, being the highest of the single digit numbers, holds an elevated position in terms of responsibilities to mankind.

Material gain is not overly important, although some Life Path 9 people are materially rewarded in significant ways. In this, however, the 9 Life Path is not apt to get rich since they’re very generous—many times to a fault—and usually have an easy come, easy go attitude about money.

The 9 Life Path indicates you have a commanding presence. You have the ability to make friends easily, as people are attracted to your magnetic, open personality. You meet people easily and are quickly befriended because of your openness and amiable demeanor. Your genial ways often put you in the lead in whatever you pursue.

Your quite inquisitive and your extreme sensitivity makes you understand and respond easily to people, atmosphere, attitudes, music, sounds, color, and personalities. This makes you very perceptive and accentuates your interest in the meaning behind everything you come across. All things mystic appeal to you and you feel the need to delve deeper—to see for yourself just what they may hold for you.

You tend to be quite sensitive because you experience through the lens of feeling. The number 9’s deep understanding of life is sometimes manifested in the artistic and literary fields. If drama and acting isn’t your forte, it will surely be an area of great interest and potential. Likewise, you may be able to express your deep emotional feelings through painting, writing, music, or other art forms.

The purpose of life for those with a 9 life path is often of a philosophical nature. Judges, spiritual leaders, healers, and educators frequently have much 9 energy. The number is less inclined to the competitive business environment and may even find this a struggle.

The Shadow Side
Because of the demanding nature of the truly positive 9, many tend to fail in this category. It’s not uncommon for persons with the 9 life path to fight the realities and challenges of purpose imposed here because selflessness isn’t an easy trait.

You may have difficulty believing that giving and a lack of ambition for personal gain can be satisfying. It must be realized and accepted that little long-term satisfaction and happiness is to be gained by rejecting the natural humanitarian inclinations of this path.

You’re romantic, but your love is more impersonal because you tend to be focused on your dreams. When you’re not in harmony with your true nature, you can fall to moodiness, or become aloof, and withdrawn. You can become timid, uncertain, and ungrateful, putting the blame for your troubles on others or the world.

Your concern for and interest in others tends to unnerve you at times, causing you to either rise to the heights of ecstasy or sink into the depths of depression.

Famous People with Life Path 9

Life Path 9 Compatibility
The Life Path 9 person has a natural fit with Life Paths 3, 6, and 9. They get along well with Life Paths 1 and 5. They’re neutral with Life Paths 2 and 7. But they find a challenge (or need to compromise) with Life Paths 4 and 8.

  1. Well Laurie, this long awaited post has been extremely helpful in understanding my positive living life path 9 husband whose shadow side I know well from being so close. Even as the most quiet reserved person he is easily liked and loved. Amazing. Thank you for all your work on these posts and for your sharing. Terrill

    • Terrill – You are most welcome. I’m glad that the information in the Life Path 9 post resonated with you regarding David. I’m going to wrap up this series — Numerically Speaking — with the Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33 over the next three posts, and then give my analytical hat a bit of a rest.

  2. I am definitely a 9 in nearly every waking hour – I would give away my last quarter and have to someone in need.

Now if I could just figure out how to make a living wage! I just give away my time and talents

I am married to a 3, who right now has requested we not be generous at all with time or money – I am finding this hard.

I find it very difficult to focus on myself and my needs and making any money
Carl Jung was also a 9 (Gandhi too) They were very influential people in my life.

    Thanks for doing this

    • Patricia – Life Path’s 9’s are pretty amazing. I don’t have any in my immediate family, but I seem to have a lot friends who are 9’s. I’m glad you’re enjoying the “Numerically Speaking” series. I’m having fun presenting it 🙂

  3. Thank you, Laurie. I too am married to a 9, and found myself nodding and mumbling “that’s why” to much (not all) of what you have shared. I can’t wait to find what exactly a master number is.

    • Kathy – I’m glad the Life Path 9 information resonated as it relates to Christopher. As I recall, he’s got a birthday coming up, and you’ll be traveling to California to see him. We’ll almost be crossing paths. You’ll pave the way in March. We’ll bring up the rear in April 🙂

  4. I don’t know that I know any 9’s . . . but I will start adding up numbers. People think that I really want to know their birthdays so I can give them a present. Ha! I just want to know if I am going to get along with them or not!

  5. I was thinking that someone in my family was a “9” but no. There are qualities here that we’ve seen in the other numbers, but what sets this apart in the combination which is unique and singular. Taken as a whole we’ve learned quite a bit about ourselves, perspective and how to enhance the favorable quotient.

  7. Laurie, I was somewhat stunned when I read this. It’s as if someone has looked into me and put into words some of my deepest and unspoken challenges in life (and soul). Oh, my!

I was wondering what I might find/feel here as bits and peices of other numbers have also resonated in an eerily familiar way. Now this makes more sense.

I’m also a nine who has been somewhat challenged by this Life Path and feel that it’s only been recently (moving into my 60’s) that it’s beginning to change and unfold 🙂

  8. Hi Laurie
I am super happy to have found your post, this all resonates with me and I am grateful to understand myself a wee bit more 🙂 Much love and Light. Vicki

  9. I am a 9 and can identify with all aspects of a 9’s life path. I try to help in any way I can. I am constantly trying to think of ways to help mankind…And I love music. I am very comfortable on stage, i love talking about nearly everything. I really enjoy working with kids and they usually enjoy my approach.

Currently, I am working on a plan that will provide a nice relaxing environment for vacationeers. I also plan to provide affordable housing without a 30 year mortgage or life time rent payments for the baby boomers. For me, it’s all about making life better for us all.

I truly believe we can live on this earth in harmony with each other and all of nature. I am thoroughly convinced that man can evolve to the point where many of the negatives in life can be eliminated. Okay, you can call me a utopian.

  10. Hi Laurie:
Being interested in the Mystic (as you noted) I had previously found that Life Path 9 was were I live. And, I love your write up on this Life Path (compared to others I’ve read). It certainly resonates it almost every way. I have also looked at 7 and 9 year phases of life (or patterns) It is so great to see these patterns unfold; natural ebbs and flows. Thanks again. Audrey

  11. i am nine almost all of me is 9.when i sum up my full name it resulted with a nine either i include my middlename it still nine. amazing. and i have weird dreams. very weird sometimes creepy and sometimes it happens in my real life situations.

  12. I am a 9 and just starting to fully get myself. I have been this way my whole life “9” and have been through so in my life it fells like 9 lifetimes. I also all my names are master numbers 11,22, and 33. I was born 8/11/79. I am understanding more about my path and life but it is messing with me for many reasons. One being I am a very abundant with money and love the luxury’s of life and finding out that 9’s are supposed to be poor? It really messes with me that I always pick out the most expensive things, drive, travel, and dress so nice yet I am supposed to not have money ? Maybe you can help?

    • Steven – Being a Life Path 9 does not mean that you are supposed to be poor. Rather, it means that you have been gifted with the opportunity to share with others who are less fortunate.

      • The poor thing I said is untrue . I have always been very generous with myself and money with others. Just really understanding this because I have been through so much in my life and each event has brought me closer to a better understanding of me. I am just around some that do not understand my life path and do not understand my beliefs , but they don’t have to. I love who I am and will continue down my path of selflessness. Thank you so much for responding, you are very kind with your words.

      • Steven – The pleasure was mine. I hope you’ll come back to visit Speaking from the Heart again. I post on Tuesdays (sort of like Tuesdays with Laurie)…

  13. Dear Laurie,
My birthdate is March 21, 1965, so my life path is 9. Could you tell me if there is any significance to the month being 3, the day coming to 3 and the year to 3?
Thank you in advance for your response.

    • Sue – If I was to hazard an educated guess, I would suggest to you that beings a Life Path 9 with birth month, birth date, and birth year that additionally add up to 9 (the last of the single-digit numbers) that this life is your last go-round. In other words, you won’t need to come back again (in another lifetime) for additional class work (so to speak).

      Does that help?

      • wow … no more class work? phenomenal. somehow or another, my guess is that I have several more life classes to attend. this is based on my own amateur assessment, and not on my date of birth (which is Aug 8, 1958). my guess would be that the numbers and my assessment wouldn’t be too far apart. the thought of it frightens me in one way, and encourages me in another way. perhaps there’s still time.

      • Ntexas99 – One of my all-time favorite quotes is, “Everything changed the day she figured out there was exactly enough time for the important things in her life.” — Brian Andreas

  14. Laurie, this is the first Life Path post I’ve read, and you have described me to a T. I can’t believe you wrote this without knowing me, haha! Now, I will have to read about them all, and try and see if you have captured my husband. Thanks for liking “Late Bloomer!” – Kaye

  15. Hello! I casually ran into your website, and I’m quite happy I did! You see, I’m a life path nine and recently tried befriending a life path two, after a romantic relationship was politely rejected. It was fine at first because I naturally listened, but–because we only really talked online and not in person–I became impatient and upset, specifically after receiving no response after I asked her if she wanted to go out for coffee and talk.

I felt I was being used, in a way, which I feel fits with number nines being sensitive and freely giving. Long story short, we no longer talk, but maybe it’s for the best (although I’m still very much in love with her).

It just got me thinking, though–what do you mean by life paths two and nine being neutral with each other? They can’t be good friends or lovers?

Thanks for listening to my rant. 🙂

    Thank you and happy December!

    • Dylan – It’s not that a Life Path 2 and a Life Path 9 can’t be friends and/or lovers; it’s simply neutral – which in most cases means it would take effort on each person’s part to make cause sparks that ignite (sort of like rubbing two sticks together)…

  16. Hi Laurie, I just stumbled upon your site today, very informative. Well, basically I’m a 9, and my partner is a 4 so that explains why we separated a couple of times way back. Good thing though we are back for good guess we learned how to compromise and work rough ends as a team? 🙂 I’m actually having a little problem here we were planning for marriage probably next year (Snake year), I have been doing my research ever since regarding the best date for us which I found out should be a sum of 1 or 9. Found dates which are good 05/26 (Lunar 04/17) Sun. – against Dog = 1 and 08/04 (Lunar 06/28) Sun. – against Monkey = 9, Just two dates to choose for marriage 😦 . I’m just wondering if the computation for a person’s life path same with how you compute for marriage?? If you’ll be kind enough to help, I’ll be forever thankful.

    • MJ – First and foremost let me say that it’s not the date of your marriage that’s important, it’s every single day that comes after that that’s vital. This coming from a woman who’s been happily married to the same man for almost 33 years. We eloped on St. Patrick’s Day.

That said, let’s get down to business…

If you’re going to use numerology as a factor in selecting the date of your wedding, you may want to consider selecting a day that when added up, and then reduced to a single digit, comes out to ONE. Why? One is all about new beginnings. A clean slate, or sorts.

So how is the math done? Let’s use my wedding day as an example (it’s doesn’t reduce to ONE, it’s merely an example to show you how to do the math):

      March 17, 1980

      03
      17
      1980
      ____
      2000 reduced = 2

You may want to consider having a relationship report run to see how your personalities mesh numerologically speaking. If you’d like more information, here’s a link to that page on my website: http://www.holessence.com/numerology/numerologyreport.html

      • Thank you so much for this, somehow I am relieved, I actually don’t want to rely on numerology and stuffs especially when it comes to relationships, BUT there’s this part of me that makes me want to consider those readings and guides. I am a libra and my partner is a virgo, astrologically speaking we are not compatible, which I found true from way back, we fought a lot of times, misunderstood each other etc. name it we had it. Until the 3rd time we got back together (stupid decision as they say, but there he was feeling terribly sorry for the very last time), I really thought the magic was totally gone and I’m already moving on but then our love was stronger that even though we were with someone else; we feel much at home and comfortable with each other. Making my long story short, we are now at peace if I may put it into words, the last few years was a battle but this one now is calm. I just want a happy, long-lasting marriage with this person, guess that’s one nature of a libra? I am so happy for you, 33yrs of marriage and still strong, a dream that I want to achieve too 🙂 YOU ARE THE GREATEST LAURIE. Thank’s a bunch for your help 🙂 God bless!

  17. i have so many 9 in numerology, and most importantly i have a life path 9 but im still quite young, however i can feel that i evolve with each step i take each decision i make, im never done i always tend to go for the big picture, im often sad by the world status, but i know that when i speak from the heart right now that when i get the opportunity or when i made myself an opportunity to change the world to a better place for everyone i will definitely do it no matter what cost. Im aswell struggling with negative aspects of life path 9, and in general when you have many Nines, its quite tough to be honest some times. But i never give up, im discovering more and more my purpose in this life, i wish i have dony many things differently, but still here iam now and i know that the things that happened to me in the past have made me stronger on the end, I wish sometimes that i was not alone in this fight, but even tho it seems that im alone in this materialistic world, i know deep in my heart that there are millions others loving. So for now i can share my heart with you others. And i will keep on believing in myself for better tommorow. Peace

  18. Always felt 9 was my number so interested to discover it is also my life path. You’re right though – I do struggle somewhat in my competitive business world – I never feel this is my natural environment!

  19. I suppose that none of this will come as a surprise to you. Due to my limited ability to be at the computer right now, today is the first time I’ve visited your blog in a bit. Well, the first time I’ve visited it with the intention to read all the way through a post, and take the time to absorb the entire message, rather than skim through, in the hopes of snatching up the tasty bits in one quick swallow. When I got an email notification that you had visited my blog recently (thank you), below it were some “recent posts”, and without regard to why, I clicked on Life Path 9 (I suppose I figured I’d work my way backwards, or maybe I was just curious enough to skip ahead, and try to do the speed-reading version after all, or perhaps it was just providence). In any case, it turns out that not only have you chosen to use that beautiful stone photo for your Life Path posts (and I’m particularly in tune with stones right now), but it also turns out that my Life Path Number is 9. What a shock. 🙂

In my blog I recently spoke about how I’ve bumped across the art of stone balancing, and how I am allowing that art form to work in my life as a form of meditation, and even worship. Thought I should mention to you that many, many months (or years?) ago, I remember crossing paths with you, and I remember how you introduced me to the concept of crystals, and the idea of allowing their energy into your life. Again, I suppose it will be no surprise to you that I’ve chosen a large chunk of amethyst quartz crystal to use as the base for my stone-balancing exercises. I was immediately drawn to the rough surface, and the delicate color variations, and I suppose for reasons that are not yet clear to me, it is helping me shift my focus, and improve my clarity of thought. Such a beautifully simple, and complex, stone.

Thank you for posting these Life Path Number exercises. I look forward to calculating the Life Path Number of my loved ones, and learning more about this interesting and prophetic glimpse into our potential (or the precautionary views), based on our Life Path Number. All of this is new to me, and feeling so much like a sponge that is already drenched with new information, it is taking me a while to absorb the bits and pieces, but I find it curiously energizing to continue down this path of knowing. Thank you, again, for sharing. Your generosity has always been abundantly evident, and I look forward to learning more about this practice.

    • Natexas99 – It was years ago in the online Gaia community that we met, and it’s always a pleasure when we cross paths. I’ve always been a fan of the way you wordsmith. I’m not in the least bit surprised that the frequency of amethyst is currently resonating with you. It has one of the highest and fastest vibrations; one that meshes well with plugging into that which is Divine. When I realized it was your blog that I’d found, I was tickled pink…or purple as the case may be 🙂

      • Laurie .. I had to laugh when I came back to read your response … when I commented on this post earlier today, I didn’t realize that you posted this series in early 2011 … guess I’m a little late to the party on this one, but I don’t find it at all surprising that when you clicked the LIKE button on my post (thanks for visiting), it automatically gave me three “relevant posts” and I happened to click on Life Path 9, which brought me to this post, which I mistakenly thought was your most recent blog post (ooops). Then I then subsequently learned that 9 happens to be my Life Path Number. Synchronicity.

Yes, I remember the deliciousness of the Gaia community, and even though I’ve been very sporadic in my blogging since that time, I’ve kept in touch with a few of my previous Gaia blog buddies. Your “what you are not changing, you are choosing” has stuck with me over the years, and always sits in the back of my mind. What am I choosing today?

Accepting the realization that it is a choice requires us to take responsibility for the choice, which was a concept that I initially had trouble accepting (or getting comfortable with), but over the ensuing months and years, I’ve become more aligned with that reality. Thanks again for your always encouraging and uplifting words, and your generosity of spirit.

      • Ntexas99 – I love the way the Universe flits about with its Synchronistic Wand — flinging a bit here, a dash there, and a dollop over yonder. It brought you to some information that resonated with you and that’s what matters 🙂

  20. Every single bit true, and divine timing. I love your energy ❤ I am so glad to be into the part of my life where I am embracing my desire to give and serve and pouring the empathic emotion into writing and paint. I thank you so much for this. And another 9 you listed is Harrison Ford,…. we happen to have the same birthdate as well. Much love and light to you beautiful one. ~ xo

  21. Thanks for stopping by 13th Paradigm Laurie. Wonderful to meet you. I have known for quite a while that I was a life path 9 and have known some of the meanings for 9 in the realm of numerology but not in connection with the Life Path. So I am thrilled to have this information. Just made a whole lot of sense of my life, by reading this post. Humanitarian and Utopian are two words that describe me to a T. I feel like I am finally aligning with some of my natural qualities and lo and behold — my life is getting a whole lot easier. Imagine that?! Blessings and love, Alia

  22. nead to know the suitable name number for life path number nine?
my name number is 5 and life path number is 9, is this compatible?

    • Imran – Having a name number 5 in numerology gives you a special edge in business. Successful businessmen know this and change their business names to Number 5 in order to be successful. And yes, name number 5 and life path 9 are well suited to each other 🙂

  23. Hi Laurie!

What do you think of this? Have you seen it before?

    Sept, 27, 1962
    9 + 9 + (18) 9 = 27
    2+7 = 9

I appreciate your thoughts and comments. 🙂

  24. Laurie, I do not know why your gravatar jumped out at me at Petals just now, but now I do. My norm when NOT busy with taking photos as I am now, is to get to each and every person who visits me at Petals and go to their blog to either like their work or comment. I’ve let go of that hugely, for being only one person, and taking thousands of pics right now, will do that. So, imagine my surprise when I clicked on you, and then read THIS. I AM A NINE LIFE PATH. And everything you said, and everything I have read about this Life Path is me to a tee. I was also shown how later in life (which I am there now) I would begin to succeed as to my Purpose for being here. It has everything to do with Petals. Everything. I feel it. I know it. My Passion for my work is huge and it is based on the urge of my Heart to share, to help, to give to those who come to Petals, …. Beauty and Truth and Love and OH so much of ME! And the more I give, the more my Heart grows! I just followed you, by the way. I really REALLY like your blog and YOU, and I also wish to take this time to say Bless you and thank you for coming to Petals to view my work. My need to help change this world to one founded in LOVE is my push that never lets me stop. This summer I have been led to water as never before, as if Mother Earth is about to give birth. I feel it. And as She does, I am too. I am giving birth to ME, as to WHY I was born. I have tears in my eyes, for the excitement is so great, and the thrill is so acute, and the gratefulness is so huge, all because I have walked through more deserts and fires and desolations to get here, to where I am today. Thank YOU for listening to me, as I am pouring out my Heart to you. I hope to get to know you better. With LOVE and (((HUGS)))) Amy

      • (SMILING!) Thank YOU! I worked BELIEVE ME and (still am) to shine the STAR I AM. To walk into that Purpose for why I was born, feels SOOOOOO good! I have just begun! Bless you, Laurie, for now being a part of my Life. (((HUGS))) Amy

      • Amy Rose – I’m glad you know your purpose and that you’re living it. When a person understands their purpose, all of the previous “fluff” seems to fall away 🙂

      • And the crud. I’m in the process of allowing the crud to fall away. Tough process. Yet, this too is Perfect and is Good.

  25. PS There is ONE thing that does not line up with my Life regarding all I have read about number 9. Most people I make nervous. Most people do not wish to be friends with me. So my life has turned out very solitary. And why do most people act like this? I see and speak Truth. And they know it. People, most, hide. They do not wish to be seen. They play their games and they pretend to be other then who they really are. I see through the guises. And that reflects both in my eyes and in my energy. I’ve been like this since a child. I’m still hoping that with the ongoing unfolding of Petals, that will change. I know many of like mind have come into my life through Petals, but still not in “real Life”. I have plenty of time to focus on my photography, my writing, and to help all those animals that come to me for healing and Love. I have a Love relationship with animals and plants, but people tend to shy away from me. My success regarding my Dreams, has begun to come into manifestation, so this too shall change. Laurie, for me to open myself like this is very unusual. Yet, it feels right to do so. I am humbled that I was led here and my Heart just opened. And I am very grateful indeed. (((HUGS))) Amy

    • Amy Rose – One of the things I tell my clients on a regular basis is, “Never let yourself be held hostage by the opinion of others.” It’s made a huge positive difference in my life 🙂

      • Thank you, Laurie. Thank you! Living in a part of the world where different is frowned upon and not accepted, has made for a very challenging life. I walk my talk, I walk tall, and IF someone does not like what I say, or how I look, or how I “see”, it is NOT my problem. Looking back, my entire life has prepared me for the position I am presently in, and it is a good one. So all things DO have purpose. I look forward in reading your work. My prob is time …. real life is very full and then photography plus blogging …. some days are a whirl. Those blogs that really tug at me, I MAKE time for. Yours is one of them. (((HUGS))) Amy

  26. Aloha Laurie, I just discovered I’m a 9, Wow! So many questions answered!. Yes, humanitarian/missionary work in Haiti.. I grow food and love Art, ie. painting, photography, macrame, Aspiring chef as well. I was the student in Maui Hi.Culinary School. Everyday taking all the left overs from school, to feed the homeless, ( they lived on the beach).:-) Mahalo for this wonderful blog, Girlfriend. Blessings**Tottie**

  27. Hi
I am a 9 life path number and my birth number is 2. i am planning to conduct cooking classes. My DOB is 20/11/1976. What number should my business number add to such that its compatible with my life path and birth number. Please help!!

  28. I’ve read this before but am visiting again. As a 9, at 49 yrs old, I’m exhausted. I did find a path for my life that has truly helped me, by being forced health wise from my addictions and giving selflessly to another in a relationship, with a 3, that needed me. In turn I am rewarded. What I lack, he has, and vice versa. I have found balance, happiness, for now, and some peace. When I stay on the right path, everything is easy. But if I veer off course, I am promptly notified from above.
