Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) – A Universal Healing Aid

Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is the psychological acupressure technique that optimizes emotional health. Although it’s often overlooked, emotional health is absolutely essential to physical health and healing. Regardless of how devoted we are to a nutritional diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle, our bodies can’t achieve their ideal healing and preventive powers if emotional barriers stand in the way.

EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments, but without the needles. Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the head and chest.

This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the emotional block(s) from our body’s bio-energy system, thus restoring balance to mind and body—a vital component for optimal health and the healing of physical disease.

Just yesterday when I was teaching a Reiki Level 2 class, I sensed the student on the table had significant pent-up emotions. I requested permission from her to gently tap with my fingertips above her eyebrows, temples, beneath her eyes, under her nose, her chin, and the clavicle bones on either side of the divot in her throat. She agreed. In less than 3-minutes, the dam burst and the tears started to flow, and I hadn’t even stated any affirmations.

EFT is something that a person learns and typically does for themselves. Here is a LINK that will take you to a YouTube video by Gary Craig – Founder of Emotional Freedom Techniques. At the end of the 7-minute video, you’ll be given the website address to download a FREE manual on how to do EFT. It’s an amazing universal healing aid that you simply have to try for yourself.

Ted Howard in New Zealand, invited me to write a guest blog, which I did. My topic is the Top 12 Anti-Cancer Foods. I hope you’ll pop over there for a visit.

  1. Hi Laurie,
ok well I’m days late and just posted a comment on your crytal blog.
This looks interesting. EFT, I will have to do this on my own least I break out in some kind of crying spell I can’t stop.
I am just way to excited and happy right now.
I am off to Salt Lake City with my son so he can take his written pilot lic. test.

    • Jean – When you have a chance, watch the 7-minute video and then at the end, download the FREE manual on how to do it. You’re son’s a pilot? My husband (Len) is too. He loves to fly!

  2. Hi Laurie

EFT is something we have a bit of experience on. Ailsa has gotten quite into over the last couple of years, and last year went to a conference in Coff’s Harbour, Australia on it.

There are a quite a few people here in Kaikoura who use it.

    It does seem to work.

From my world view, what is going on is not quite what the explanation that comes with the technique says, and it does seem to work.
To me it seems that the rhythmic stimulation of areas of the body creates a corresponding pattern in the brain, which pattern assists in changing the associations that we have with particular memories. This change is bought about in several ways, the main one being that long term memories must be stored again after recall, and the context of the storage can be changed in the process. Thus we are able to alter the emotional contexts (emotional meaning) associate with previous experiences, and through that, alter their impact on our present and future.

It seems to be a very powerful technique.
I have done very little of it myself, and I have observed great results from Ailsa engaging in it.

It seems very closely related to John Sarno’s Mind-Body work, and also to much of what underlies Wener Erhard’s EST (Landmark Education) stuff – or for that matter any and all “spiritual” experiences, from Zen to Catholicism to Dervish mystics.

It all works, after a fashion, though I suspect not at all for the reasons that most practitioners think.

    • Ted – I don’t know WHY it works, but I do know THAT it works. It simply is what it is. I’m so glad you’ve seen visible, tangible results in observing Ailsa. This morning when Len was pumping gas in the car, I just sat there and tapped away. I didn’t have any “issue” in mind, nor did I use any affirmations. I simply tapped away because it’s incredible the way you feel afterwards. People looked at me tapping away, and I just smiled (like the cat that ate the canary).

  3. My dad has had wondrous results using EFT for some of his health problems. He swears by it. I have not used it much–but remain open minded about the possibility some day!

  4. Hi, Laurie, since you AND Ted have both endorsed this method of emotional healing, the least I can do is a bit of research on it and give it a whirl or a tap or whatever. I do suspect I have have an emotional battle raging within, myself accusing my body of betrayal for having a heart attack and my body fuming at myself for expecting more of it than I had any business doing. At any rate, I am still in a snit over the whole up-ending of my life as I had it planned out, no room for variables or things that don’t work. Looks like time to learn new methods. Thanks for this interesting information, I had no idea.

    • Yes, Sandi, I highly recommend a whirl and a tap, or a tap and a whirl — you’ve got nothing to lose. And you can download the manual for free. You can’t beat that deal with a stick!

  5. Laurie,
You definitly beat or tap to your own drummer. That is what I enjoy about you so much. I can just see the other people looking at you, and I would love to hear what they were actually thinking you were doing.

As for EFT, I too will need to check this out for more info. Especially after a loved one basically discounted everyones opinion today except their own. Makes one feel so important or others feel les simportant? I am trying to figure that one out this evening. The family unit is so exasperating sometimes.

Ii was also wondering if during one of my energy session I may have experianced EFT, probably in a different way i guess.

Thanks for always keeping our minds asking for more!

    Kim

    • Kim – families and loved ones sure can be hard to figure out sometimes. And while you’ve not experienced EFT specifically in one of our sessions, you reached the same tree using a different path.

  6. Hi, Laurie — I saw the video on You Tube and downloaded the manual and subscribed to the newsletter. This sounds just like the perfect thing to do at home AND at work: just close the door and practice a few minutes a day. I will let you know of my experiences (especially if I can get my eyesight better!).

    • Jeff – Please keep me posted. It’s easy to learn and extremely effective. The dividend (tangible results) is well worth the investment (a few minutes of time).

  7. I bounced over here from Barbara’s post about this subject, (sorry, I don’t know html so I have to post the link this way: http://eternalpresence.wordpress.com), and was intrigued. I’ll be following your link to the youtube video and will download the manual, so thanks for sharing that information.

There’s something in me that is very stuck right now, and I can’t quite put my finger on it (all puns, of course, intended). Perhaps this will jiggle something loose and help me spin things back in the right direction again.

I am a firm believer in being open to all experiences, and have even been giving serious consideration to the possibility of trying hypnosis to help myself become unstuck. It’s very much like I am getting in my own way right now, and even though I acknowledge it and recognize it and call it what it is, I haven’t yet been able to figure out how to alter the dynamic and switch directions. I waffle between giving up and moving forward.

Usually I’m not much into throwing in the towel, so it’s been frustrating and a bit disheartening to be so stuck lately. On those days when my eyes are open and my ears are listening, I try to make good use of the time. With that being said, thanks again for the EFT link to the youtube video and free manual. I’m open to try some tapping and twirling and see what happens next.

    • Nancy – I’m so glad you stopped in, thank you. You will enjoy EFT — it’s easy to do and it works! If I were “stuck,” I would spend my money on Reiki as opposed to hypnotherapy (this statement coming from a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist). Certain modalities work better for certain things. It’s my opinion that Reiki would quite possibly be a better fit for your “stuckness.” I’ll be presenting Reiki in the next Energy Medicine 101 class — stay tuned.
