LIFE PATH 1
The Path of the Leader

As in everything, number 1 denotes the first. Your strong sense of individuality and positive nature assure you of leadership in all your endeavors. You can never be relegated to a position of subservience. Determination is the strength of your ambition, and it manifests itself in an authoritative manner that shows your skill and experience. Your originality, creativeness, and aggressiveness breathe life into your ideas and build them into productive form. You’re blessed with executive ability and can manage the organization of any business, group, or household with great ease and success.

You’re at your best when you start any project from its conception and learn by your mistakes. You stand on your own feet no matter how difficult a situation may be, whether in business or of a personal nature. You always make your own decisions and stand by them in spite of advisers who aren’t in agreement. Developing new concepts and methods comes easily to you, you would do well to capitalize on this talent. Extend yourself in all fields of interest because success is yours, no matter what area you delve into.

Unless it’s sensible or practical to do so, you’ll never walk the common paths, but search out new, more exciting ones, which will generally prove fruitful. There’s no need to repeat yourself. You can take the lead in anything and therefore new ideas are necessary.

Select your own assistants carefully for any project. It’s necessary to choose those that can do as you direct, inasmuch as your methods are bound to be revolutionary and require strict adherence to your instructions. Don’t allow anyone to put you off, change your mind, or interfere in your affairs, as your way is generally best.

Accept all responsibility without concern because you have the power to overcome all obstacles and turn them into assets.

The Life Path 1 suggests that you entered this plane with skills allowing you to become a leader type rather easily. Your nature is charged with individualistic desires, a demand for independence, and the need for personal attainment. Many of our military generals, corporate leaders, and political leaders are men and women having the Life Path 1.

When you display positive 1 traits, your mind is capable of significant creative inspiration, and it possesses the enthusiasm and drive to accomplish a great deal. You’re very good at getting the ball rolling; initiating new projects is your forte. You’re at your best when confronted with obstacles and challenges, as you combat these with strength and daring. This is both the physical and inner varieties of strength. With this strength comes utter determination and the capability to lead. As a natural leader you have a flair for taking charge of any situation. You have a tendency to do this, even if, at times, it’s not appropriate for you to do so.

Highly original, you may have talents as an inventor or innovator of some sort. In any work that you choose, your independent attitude shows through. You have very strong personal needs and desires, and you feel it’s always necessary to follow your own convictions. You tire of routine and highly detailed tasks rather quickly.

You’re considered very good company, friendly, good-natured, and a wonderful conversationalist. People like you and are drawn to you.

The Shadow Side
The negative aspects of your number encourage the tendency to become dictatorial and tactless. Diplomacy is always the best tactic with which to get your way. Being dictatorial will negate your chances of success. Hypersensitivity is another negative aspect that must be controlled. It’s difficult for you to accept criticism, yet you can be rather critical of others. Allow your better instincts to prevail, and you should be able to subdue these negative qualities. Selfishness, depression, and vanity are other traits that can mitigate your success. Your path will be one of great power and success if you accept the role of leader and play it with all good faith, understanding, and generosity.

There are several ways that the negative side of the 1 can show up. The 1 always has the potential for greatness as a leader, but they may fail as a follower. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to follow for a while before you’re allowed to lead and this can be a difficult time. When the 1 Life Path person is not fully developed and expressing the negative side of this number, the demeanor may appear dependent rather than independent, particularly in the early years. If you’re expressing this negative trait of the number 1, you’re likely to be very dissatisfied with your circumstances and long for self-sufficiency. This might be defined as the weak or dependent side of the negative 1 Life Path. On the strong side of this negative curve, the 1 energy can become too self-serving, selfish, and egotistical. Avoid being too bossy and demanding.

Famous People with Life Path 1 Include:
Steve Jobs, Maya Angelou, Drew Barrymore, Michael Bolton, Nicolas Cage, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tom Clancy, George Clooney, Sean Connery, David Copperfield, Tom Cruise, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tom Hanks, Holly Hunter, Billy Joel, Scarlett Johansson, Magic Johnson, Wynonna Judd, Larry King, Calvin Klein, Matt Lauer, Matt LeBlanc, David Letterman, Tim McGraw, Jack Nicholson, Dan Rather, Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Kate Winslet, and Tiger Woods.

Life Path 1 Compatibility
The Life Path 1 person has a natural fit with Life Paths 1, 5, and 7. They get along well with Life Paths 3 and 9. They’re neutral with Life Path 8’s. But they find a challenge (or need to compromise) with Life Paths 2, 4 and 6.

  1. Goodmorning Laurie…..this is so interesting! I have lived with a 1 for many years and this ABSOLUTELY fits. Especially when looked at from the perspective (and gift) of knowing this 1 for a large part of his life.

Utter determination, enthusiasm and drive to accomplish a great deal, at your best when confronted with great obstacles and challenge, hypersensitivity and difficulty accepting critisim ( a challenge in early years)…….

Every trait and characteristic that you have described seems to ring true….or seems to have been present at some point over the years. At least from the outside, looking in 🙂

  2. Hi, Laurie, no wonder I live alone! Besides being a 1, I am also a Dragon ( Chinese ) and a Virgo. My husbands declared that I drove them crazy so I fired both of them. No wonder I get along so well with Chickens, they pay me absolutely no mind at all. Except when they see me coming with food of course. I don’t think you added irritable, ungracious, and perfectionist to the list but those may just be my shortcomings. On the other hand, sometimes I am discerning, empathetic, and generously warm-hearted. They key, of course, is to be balanced in all things. This is very interesting and fun to hear about. I am going to go find my crayons now and get creative….

    • Sandi – You’re comment has me cracking up! I’ve known you too long to know that you’re anything but a crotchety old coot. In the Chinese Zodiac I’m a rooster. Maybe The Chicked Ladies would love me (but then I remember poor old Barney)…

I hope that you’re having an excellent day with your crayons. Are you still snow bound?

      • Laurie, I wouldn’t want to see the Hawk that would tangle with you! Poor old Barney was a feather-weight and cocky to boot. We have snow and we have ice. No school or mail for a week. In ’82 we had the Snow-Jam….Party! In this decade we are playing it safe and staying off the roads. But I did get my truck out and went to the store, their cupboards were almost bare, I, however am fine.

      • Sandi – I know poor old Barney was just a wee bit cocky for his own good, but to be taken out by a Hawk, that’s kinda harsh. Your 1982 Snow-Jam party sounds like it was fun! Alas, with age we tend to have a bit more wisdom tucked up underneath our belt – staying off icy roads is definitely the best decision.

Did you have better weather today? I’m wondering if your snow will melt, then turn to ice this evening when the temperature drops again. It does that on a frequent basis here.

    • Hahahaha! I am also a (sometimes) ungracious, irritable perfectionist who can be empathetic, discerning and warm-hearted. I think those are great traits to add to the list of 1’s, I couldn’t have described myself any better. 🙂

Thank you Laurie for this wonderful site! I’m just finding it now and I love it!

    • Kim – I launched this series with the post “How to Calculate Your Life Path Number” using a photograph I took of a path leading down to the beach during my recent trip to southern California. In keeping with that “theme” I took a photo of 1 rock on the sandy beach to illustrate Life Path 1, a photo of 2 rocks on the sandy beach to illustrate Life Path 2, and so on (through 9).

I wish I could tell you that it was more profound and mysterious than that, but alas – it’s straightforward and simple 🙂

  3. It figures that Sandi is a 1 . . . this description suits her to the core. And, by the way, Laurie, I am a rooster as well. I love these descriptions and I feel sorry for all the poor souls who I am going to be asking for their birth dates from here on out.

    • Barbara – From one rooster to another… isn’t Life Path 1 spot on for Sandi?! Hula burgers, it’s almost scary. Trust me, the people you ask for their birthdates will be delighted with the information you provide them. It’s a lot of fun! Have yourself one heckofa weekend!

  4. Looks like those with “1” have many admirable traits! My own time is ‘down the road’ but I would love to know the traits and characteristics that govern each sub-group. This first presentation is fascinating.

    • Sam – With your household of 7 (2 parents and 5 children, if I’m remembering correctly), you’ve got to have a wide brushstroke of Life Path numbers all residing under one roof. Do any of you share the same Life Path number? If yes, I’d sure be curious to know if those relationships are more hand-in-glove, or more fire-and-ice.

      • Sam – WOW! Numerically speacking, here’s how it adds up:

Sam – as an 8, you’ll experience the most head-bumping with Jillian and Jeremy.

Lucille – as a 6, she’ll experience the most head-bumping with Sammy, Danny, and Jillian.

Melanie – as a 6, she’ll also experience the most head-bumping with Sammy, Danny, and Jillian.

Sammy – as a 1, he’ll experience the most head-bumping with Lucille and Melanie.

Danny – as a 5, he’ll experience the most head-bumping with Lucille and Melanie as well.

Jillian – as a 7, she’ll experience the most head-bumping with Lucille, Melanie, and you.

        Jeremy – as a 9, he’ll experience the most head-bumping with you.

Naturally, there are a multitude of other factors that come into play (i.e., birth order). But this is how it looks strictly through the numeric lens of Life Path numbers.

  6. Laurie, thank you. I am a 1 (and a Capricorn) and I am glad to see that I am compatible with a 5 (my husband.) Maybe that is why we are celebrating our 40th year anniversary in March. However, I know my “shadow” appeared often during some of these years. I can’t wait to read more of your posts on this subject.

    • Chris – I’m so glad you dropped by Speaking from the Heart. Our “shadow” sides are funny things (and we’ve ALL got them, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise); they come and go and give our life tapestry some of it’s interesting depth and character.

  7. Also a capricorn here and the “1” traits fit the profile! Luckily, life has pushed me to evolve and I’m not sure where I would fit at this point. I’ve learned to push ego aside, for one thing, and focus on the talents of others.

When I launched SunnyRoomStudio a year ago, it was with the goal of connecting with kindred spirits, while offering a place of inspiration and warmth, a place to showcase their talents and so on. It’s like flipping life upside down at this point in my life — as in saying, I’m here to serve the common good, a higher purpose, and to simply celebrate the many wonders of life. And that’s enough (even when society cares to differ)!

I’m sure that’s why your site and message resonates with me, Laurie — so glad to have found you out here in this vast world of ours. A blessing and a joy. Till later, with gratitude 🙂 –Daisy

    • Daisy – I love your SunnyRoomStudio! And resonated so strongly with your purpose — offering a place of inspiration and warmth — that I subscribed.

I so appreciate people who are positive, uplifting, constructive, and healing. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us.

    • Readers – Over at Wonders in the Dark, in Sam Juliano’s Monday Morning Diary (January 17) he not only speaks of “Battleship Potemkin,” “If I Want to Whistle I Whistle,” and Ibsen’s play “The Master Builder,” but he reveals the winners of The Caldecott and Newbery Medals as well.

  9. I hope you update/revise your list of famous Ones. How about some figures of world-historical import and not just movie stars and television personalities? I came across the fact that Descartes was a One, for instance. He was the beginning of many things, intellectually speaking.

  10. “Don’t allow anyone to put you off, change your mind, or interfere in your affairs, as your way is generally best.” Words all one’s want to hear now if I can just follow it! . hehe Great post!

    • Kara – All Life Path numbers must be reduced to a single digit (one through nine) with the exception of Master Numbers (11, 22, and 33). So ten is actually 1; they’re one and the same 🙂

  11. i had a long term relationship with a 1; this is comforting too…i did feel the following with our interaction but your words helped me understand at a greater depth – thank you “The negative aspects of your number encourage the tendency to become dictatorial and tactless. Diplomacy is always the best tactic with which to get your way. Being dictatorial will negate your chances of success. Hypersensitivity is another negative aspect that must be controlled. It’s difficult for you to accept criticism, yet you can be rather critical of others. “

  12. Yes, Laurie, I put up my hand; guilty as charged… haha
I’ve always found others ‘putting me up’ for leadership roles; whether that be to head a department in business, or a yoga class. I always resisted though; until it became obvious that I needed to allow these things to happen.
The negative side is/was certainly true too. Thankfully, as I’ve aged, I’ve found honey attracts far more than does vinegar….! I believe I’ve grown into one of the most diplomatic individuals I know; at least that’s what I’m told…
Thank You for this wonderful post… I too studied numerology many years ago; it certainly is a great science that proves itself, over and over again… 🙂

  13. This numerology concept is wow.I wish I can be able to apply it in all aspects of my life.I’m a 1 my partner is 7 what r our chances.

  14. Thankyou Laurie, i truly understood many things about myself after reading my life path description… I had been toiling at trying to understand why I have to jump in at the srop of a hat and take lead..a lot of times it really helped, meaning taking intitiatives a moving things, but lately, now I get it, I had been a bit reckless and was showing all the qualities of a dictator…my way, or the highway! I read also life paths of people close to me and they were on right on the dot.. It helped me understand why they dont or do certain things… i am also glad that I understand my need to be the best and can put in all that in trying to become a better human being.

  15. Hi Laurie, I born on 01 February 1978. I have the desire to start a business on my own and wondering whether I will get depresed. Please advice.

    • Naleen – Life Path 1’s are the path of the leader. Leaders are typically good entrepreneurs and have strong heads for business. But there’s much more to starting and maintaining a good healthy business then a person’s life Path number.

  16. Oy….this explains me to a T. And probably why I am still single (I’ve had two fiances, a first boyfriend, and a couple of fling romances). I’m a “1”, a Dragon (Chinese horoscope) and a Leo. This pretty much explains who I am and didn’t really come into full fruition until I was the chairperson of my high school reunion. It was very successful but man did I learn a lot about myself and how funny to find most of it in this article :o) Still hopeful for love and working toward getting a few of my projects off the ground….Life is good!

  17. Hi Laurie!

When I did my birth date I found out that I am a number 8. After reading the description of a life path 8 I would have to say that it does not describe me at all, so I decided to read all of the life path numbers to see what I could find out. I would have to say that Life path l and life path 7 both describe my personality very well. Is it possible to be a combination of two life path numbers? If so how does this affect who you get along with in compatibility?

Love your web site and hope to hear back from you.

    June

    • June – First and foremost, BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOU, regardless of your Life Path number (or Zodiac sign, etc). In living authentically (transparent) and to your highest potential, you will attract like-minded people 🙂

  18. Dear Laurie

Thank you for your response. Your advice is great and is exactly what I try to do every day in my life. As I have always acted and thought a little differently (even from my life long friends!) I have become very comfy with who I am! I love the skin I am in! lol And it is true you do attract like minded people with this attitude. Don’t you wish that more people would follow this advice and be happier in life?

    Thanks again.

    June

  19. This did resonate with me, Laurie, because my life path number is 1 and I have always been working for someone else, either at home or at work. This makes me uninterested with what I am doing, and severely unsatisfied with my life and circumstances. At some point, I tend to blame myself for not having developed my talents and abilities to be doing my own independent thing in some manner. The only time when I am happy is when I am doing something which has nobody else involved and I am sensitive to criticism. I often wonder if what I have done in the couple of decades of living in this situation will ever help me when I am actually able to move on, or whether I will forever remain like this.

    • Z — Yes, you are a Master Number 33. Please remember that all Master Numbers additionally have a Life Path Number:

Master 33 shares Life Path 6
Master 22 shares Life Path 4
Master 11 shares Life Path 2

  20. I’m about to enter a relationship with a 1 and I am a 7.. would like some good advice on how to make it work without the push and pull. He has alread exhibited signs of domineering and such as you describe..it is a long distance relationship at this point and a troubled start but I find myself giving a lot and letting go of my own negative traits as a 7 which were domoneering my life until I met him. He is challenging me..i do not want to ruin this by not being aware so i will read and reread the 1 .. any advice though would be great.. thanks..

  21. Hi, I’ve read on other websites that a LPN 1 compatibilty with another 1 is very difficult in a relationship. Can you explain why you say they are compatible? Thanks.
