How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

In Numerology, the Life Path Number represents natural characteristics, talents, and traits based on a person’s date of birth. On the day you were born certain powers were bestowed upon you that will be with you your entire life long. The Life Path Number describes the nature of your journey through life.

A person’s name may change (i.e., marriage, divorce), but unlike your name—your date of birth is unalterable and its personal vibrations shape every event or incident in your lifespan.

The Life Path number is the sum of your date of birth. It’s important to note that every Life Path Number has both positive and negative vibrations. It’s up to each of us to determine which one we’ll follow.

We’ve all known couples who don’t get along. They seem to constantly be at loggerheads because neither can understand or accept the other’s principles.

Someone born with a 5 Life Path, for instance, would have a strong urge to travel; whereas a person born with a 4 Life Path would have more of a “nose-to-the-grindstone” nature. These two could be potentially incompatible if they didn’t understand the nature of certain compromises necessary and possible in their relationship.

By using a simple calculation, you can check the Life Path Number of friends, family, acquaintances, employees, and partners for a better understanding of their aims in life and what you can expect of them as it relates to your own Life Path Number.

Remember, your Life Path number covers a person’s entire lifespan. Even though you may not currently recognize all the aspects of the path outlined, they’ll eventually be very much in evidence. Some people never recognize theirs until middle-age or after. So don’t worry if what you read isn’t all you at the moment.

The other all-important factor is whether one lives life according to its positive or negative vibrations. For instance: in a 5 Life Path, the travel indicated could represent progress in a positive sense, but great fickleness and irresponsibility when lived negatively.

How To Calculate Your Life Path Number
To determine your Life Path number, add together the number value of your month, day, and full year of birth, and then reduce the total to a single digit.  The number value for each month is:

January 1
February 2
March 3
April 4
May 5
June 6
July 7
August 8
September 9
October 10
November 11
December 12

For example, if like me you were born on September 28, 1957, you would add:

September (number value)  9
Date                                    28
Year                                1957
TOTAL                            1994

To reduce 1994 to a single digit:
1+9+9+4 = 23

But 23 is not a single digit so we need to reduce it again:
2+3 = 5

The Life Path number for a person whose date of birth is September 28, 1957, is 5.

The short method for obtaining this same number would be to add the dates this way:
9 (for September) +2+8 (for the date) + 1+9+5+7 (for the year) = 41.  Reduce this number to one digit by adding 4+1 which equals 5.

The Life Path Number represents your inborn characteristics, latent talent, moral fiber, and nature of this journey through life—all of which shape your life on earth.

    • Kathy – You’re a MASTER number (how come that comes as no surprise to me?!).

For any people whose numbers first reduce to either 11 or a 22Master Numbers — before reducing them to a single digit, when we get to the Life Path numbers 2 and 4 in my up-and-coming posts, you’ll see this verbiage at the top of each post:

Please note that certain 2’s and 4’s have a “Master Number” associated with their Life Path number; respectively 11 and 22. In Numerology, this is the equivalent to a “special mission” they have been sent to fulfill. And while Master Numbers are covered in the Numerology class I teach at HolEssence, due to time/space constraints, they won’t be covered in this blog post.”

Suffice it to say that you and I both know that you’re here for a very special purpose 🙂

      • Bimala – A person who is a Master Number 11 is a turbo-boosted version of a Life Path 2.

Similarly, a person who is a master number 22 is a turbo-boosted version of a Life Path 4, and a person who is a master number 33 is a turbo-boosted version of a Life Path 6.

  1. I’m a 7 – it’s my favorite number! I can’t wait to learn more about this, as I’ve been fascinate with numbers for years!

    Thanks for doing this,
    Naima

    • Naima – I’m glad you stopped into Speaking from the Heart and discovered you’re a Life Path 7. I post on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You’ll have to wait a few days until we get to Life Path 7, but it’ll be well worth the wait. In the meantime, perhaps some of your friends or family members are Life Paths 1 through 6 and you’ll be able to share some fun information with them.

      Stay tuned…

  2. I am a 3.
I have here a numerologybook but as it shows I always calculated it the wrong way:).
Now it fits, I think. You will tell me, I guess

    • Kathy – By any chance, when you initially reduced your numbers, were you a 22, and then you further reduced that number to the single digit 4? If yes, you’re a Master number too (like Kathy Smith, below). If that’s the case, please see my comment to her because it would apply to you as well.

    • Me too I’m a 4 and I’ve read the traits and don’t identify with them at all. I’ve known people to have these”4″ traits of being a procedure enforcing – rule following type of person and I have always butted heads with because at times they fail to see the big picture. I’ve always identified with “big picture” thinkers and holistic points of view. How on earth am I a 4?

      • Gigi –

First let me explain that there are three types of numerology: Chalean, Pythagorean, and Kabbalah. I’m a certified Phythagorean Numerologist. That may help to explain your concern, “…other sites use different adding methods that come up with different numbers” — I can’t speak for the other two.

Just like with Zodiac signs for example (there are only 12 of them) — there are just a few numbers (9 Life Path numbers and 3 Master Numbers) to describe the entire population on the globe – billions of people. Within those limitations, not everything is going to fit like a hand in a glove.

For instance, I’m a Libra. I’m also a Life Path 5. The entire description of either of them does not fit me — and some of it’s absolutely the opposite. I embrace the parts that I want to live up to; the parts that will make a better version of me; and weave those things into my life. The rest I let roll off like water on a duck.

        I hope that helps.

    • Leanne – Oh, that’s wonderful. Life Path 6 has a natural fit with 3, 6, and 9. They get along well with 2, 4, and 8, but find a challenge (or need to compromise with) with 1, 5, and 7.

I’ll be posting the nitty-gritty details of each Life Path number — 1 through 9 — one post at a time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Life Path 6 and 9 are a little bit down the line, but well worth the wait.

  3. ooops, I meant life path number.
I had a book on numberology when I was in my twenties–did everyone’s number. But I never heard about a life path number, before. I can’t wait for tomorrow.

  4. Hi, Laurie, I am still a 1. I have been looking for the report you made for me last year, My Word! Where did all this paper come from? It got into my file cabinets and did the Rabbit thing. I found it not so very long ago, looking for something else, read it and was still flabbergasted at how accurate it was!

    • Emily – I’ve had so many people pop up with Master numbers (11, 22, and 33) that I may well add the detailed information to those at the end of this series. In the meantime, pay close attention to Life Path 2 when I post about it on Tuesday, January 18th.

  5. Fascinating, Laurie! I did the math and think I came up with 10 — if I did it right! I’ll be checking back to see what this means … should be fun. Thank you also for your lovely comment in SunnyRoomStudio re Terrill’s First Light post.
(Loved it and left you a reply.)

Glad to be in touch — always looking for kindred spirits to inspire my life path and to offer my inspiration in return.

For 2011, here’s to the creative light in all of us. Best always, Daisy (will be watching for you on twitter and facebook, as well 🙂

    • Daisy – If you got “10” after the initial reduction, we’ll reduce that double-digit once more to a single digit (in this case 1 + 0 = 1). You are a Life Path 1. You’ll find out exactly what that means tomorrow (Thursday, January 13). If you’re not positive if you did it right, or not, simply send an email to me at Laurie@HolEssence.com with your full date of birth and I’ll verify it for you.

I was so pleased (impressed!) when I visited your SunnyRoomStudio that I actually subscribed – whoohoo!

      • Daisy – Ahhhh, I see. In numerology we keep reducing until we arrive at a single digit (any number between 1 and 9). To reduce the 10 we add 1 + 0 to get 1. You are, indeed, a Life Path 1. You’ll find out all the juicy details of a Life Path 1 person tomorrow morning (Jan 13). Stay tuned…

    • ColleenRick will find out all about Life Path 1 tomorrow (Thursday, January 13), but you’ll have to wait for a few posts after that (but it will be well worth it).

  6. Oh Laurie I am so glad I had you do my reports. My eyes start reaching for my nose when I start reading about how to do the calculations.

My life path number is 5.

psst! Laurie I think I am going to feel like I am cheating with all my lovely personal reports all printed up and read for the next few weeks. Thank you so much for these. They have been extremely useful.

    • Terrill – Then like me (Life Path 5) you obviously wear a halo and walk on water 🙂 I’m so glad that you’re enjoying the reports you ordered. They were fun for me to do for you!

  8. Hi Laurie,

Blessings and Happy New Year. Many moons ago, when I was 18, someone told me this was my first life. Someone else recently has told me I have had many. As a slave. So, I just happened to log on today and find..I guess intuitively, you will post a number 1. I was a 19, reduced to a 10, and Now a 1.

My wife is an 18, reduced to a 9.

Don’t tell me what Rodney Dangerfield said, ” I’m an earth sign my wife is a water sign, together we make mud ” 🙂

Curious to find something out about myself. 🙂

    Bless you from the heart,
    Tom

  9. Wow, you’re both “5”s? I’m amazed. I’ve never felt that I’ve had to compromise with either one of you. Hmmm, I wonder if I’ve figure out my number wrong.
Can I check my calculations with you, Laurie?
I apologize for the extra work, but this has truly puzzled me.

    My numerology number is 9

Life path number is 8 – very interesting switch there

  15. Hi,
I’m a little confused with how your life path is calculated and how i saw somewhere else how it is calculated. I always thought that i had a master number 11, but according to this site –
http://seventhlifepath.com/ – the numbers are reduced seperately and then added, so according to them i am a two. my dob is 25/8/1994. can you please explain?

    • Melissa – Using your birthdate of August 25, 1994 I just calculated your Life Path number two different ways and arrived at Master Number 11 both times. Please remember that Master Number 11’s also share the qualities of a Life Path 2.

      08 + 25 + 1994 = 2027
      2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11

You can also calculate it like this:
      8 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 38
      3 + 8 = 11

  17. Wow, I am a 7! Independent, prefer to work alone (no wonder my current job is making me miserable – Im in a cube surrounded by 4 coworkers who talk to me all day long!). I love my space and privacy but then I battle loneliness because I am so guarded. I have to read more on this – it makes so much sense and maybe at -age 49 I can finally find my life purpose if I dig into this a little deeper! Amazing!

    • Julie – Welcome to Speaking from the Heart. I’m glad you found something here that resonates 🙂 I just finished a series on the zodiac signs (that work hand-in-hand with our Life Path number). You may want to check out my last 13 posts (the introduction, followed by the 12 zodiac signs).

  18. Hi Laurie.
Can could you please calculate my LifePath number.
Im getting confused either it is 4 or master number 22.

Here is my birthdate: July 7 1988.

    Thank you Laurie..

  19. Im a life path number 3. I dont see many 3’s have left comments. My mom and dad are 4’s which would explain the hell my brother and I grew up in. My brother is a 6. Was not an easy household though all of us are strong personalities individually.

    • Lavanya Pankajan – Each Life Path number 1 through 9 has it’s positive (light) side, and each Life Path number has a negative (shadow) side. The choice of which one to embrace is ours.

  20. Shouldn’t my path number be a combination of all with some parameters unique? But Calc seems astrology at best or how to find your color or music style survey. We have to design ourselves with scientific/holistic, not number trick. All plans considered.

    • Carl – Great question, I’m glad you asked it.

There are a multitude of different types of numbers in numerology, all arrived at using various pieces of information. This particular post is only about an itty-bitty, teeny-weeny piece of numerology — the Life Path number.

Also, within the field of numerology, there are three forms in use today: Kabbalah, Chaldean and Pythagorean – my training is in within the Pythagorean form.

      • Few people know that Pythagoras is called the Father of Psychiatry as he was one of the earliest thinkers to present that the mind not the heart was the center of thinking (stupid Galen) and that mental illness was probably caused by some abnormality or dysfunction or illness of the brain. For therapy he proposed balanced nutrition with emphasis fruits and vegetables, long walks, stimulating conversation , hot baths and restful sleep. Hey, wait a minute . Isn’t that…..

  23. Mine was 7. Which I found interesting cuz I already been “trying” to follow 7 but never worked out the way I felt it should. It was like I always known the number, but following it..is another story

  24. Great refresher, Laurie. I remember studying this back in the 90s. Have always found it intriguing. You’re a truly outstanding writer and we share our birthday, apparently.

  25. My life path number is apparently 4. It’s absolutely nothing like me, with the exception of being analytical. Interestingly and maddeningly, my name boils down to 4 as well. And I’ve always hated my name, used to fantasize about changing it when I was a kid. I’m just a square peg in a round hole. lol

Could it work out differently, since I was born three days late? Or is it supposed to be a set in stone thing when it comes to the birth date?

Or perhaps, I should stick to what I know fits – Enneagram and Myers-Briggs.

    • Nicole – Please know that if you don’t resonate with what you read about your life path number, it’s okay to not give it a second thought. It’s not meant to be written in stone. Rather, a glimpse at potential and possibility…

  26. I am nine! I’ve recently started to feel like I have a greater pupose on earth.I’ve started to involve myself in the process of ascension.I have interests on a lot of things. That’s why I cannot focus on one.I believe that I am very very creative.I don’t know why I’ve been feeling these since a long time. Now I know the reason.

  27. You have an awesome blog really…I calculated my number too. 🙂 it comes out to b number 4. I am always very very curious about this zodiac and numerology thing. Thanks for updating me with something new and thanks for liking my story ‘ Heads we get married, tails we break up” on Everything is a story.

    • ThoughtsThatForge – Thank you for stopping by, I’m glad you calculated your Life Path number. I never met a 4 I didn’t like 🙂 I thoroughly enjoyed your writing style and story — Heads We Get Married, Tails We break Up.”

  28. Why does my life path number of 4 feel so wrong? I did the math and it keeps coming up 4. I really don’t identify with the traits of a 4. It’s also confusing because other sites use different adding methods that come up with different numbers. I can’t help feeling like this is pulling numbers out of a hat and seeing what comes up. I’m fascinated but very confused. Also is life path numbers only a Western / European concept. Sorry for all the questions just trying to understand the reasoning behind this.

    • Gigi –

First let me explain that there are three types of numerology: Chalean, Pythagorean, and Kabbalah. I’m a certified Phythagorean Numerologist. That may help to explain your concern, “…other sites use different adding methods that come up with different numbers” — I can’t speak for the other two.

Might I suggest that you embrace the part(s) what you want to live up to; take what will make a better version of you; and weave those things into your life. Let the rest roll off you like water on a duck.

  29. Hi Ms. Laurie! I have a question. I’ll admit, I get lost quickly when it comes to a mass amount of numbers and calculations, but I’m intelligent nonetheless, lol

    Birth date: July 23rd, 1992..
    07-23-1992

    But is it:
    (0+7) + (2+3) + (1+9+9+2)
    OR
    0 + 7 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 ??

    Cuz then: 0 + 7 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 33 =3+3 = 6

    OR: (7)+(5)+(21) => (7) + (5) + (3) = 15 = 6

But I’m unsure if I’m supposed to reduce or whatnot. Can you briefly explain this to me? Thanx! 🙂

    • Andrew Sp. – There are two ways to do the math (shown below). But regardless of how you slice it, you’re a Life Path 6.

7+23+1992=2022. Now to reduce that: 2+2+2=6
      or
7+2+3+1+9+9+2=51. Now to reduce that: 5+1=6.

The only exception to this would be a person who upon first reduction gets an 11, 22, or 33. Master numbers are not reduced any further.

  30. hi! i’m new in this numerology thing and it’s quite interesting for me. the problem is; my birthday is mar.3.1987. so if we’ll sum that up like: 3+3+1987= 1993 1+9+9+3= 22. But if we’ll sum it up this way: 3+3+1+9+8+7= 31 3+1=4. Which one’s the right one? I’m confuse? appreciate the response, thanks!

    • Alan – You’ve used the two ways and added correctly. ANY time one or both ways results in an 11, 22, or 33 – you can stop right there (no need to reduce further) because they’re Master numbers. If only one of the methods of addition results in an 11, 22, or 33, then it TRUMPS the other. As a Master 22, you are additionally a Life Path 4.

Note: not all Life Path 4’s are additionally Master 22.

  31. I did the calculations…and I am a Life Path 4.
But, the most part, does not match at all.
My mom told me that I was born approximately three weeks early and backwards.
She also told me what my birth date was supposed to have been….which would have been January 9, 1954. So I will recalculate using that date.
That would make me a Life Path 2, which is much closer to the truth.
I wrote about WHY I was born early, in my post: http://storieswithnobooks.com/2013/03/22/travel-agent-from-hell/.
You see, it was not my fault. It was dark in there, and I lost count of the days and time. Plus, after about 8 months in there, I was getting extremely claustrophobic. 😉
Whatever the case, I am more of a follower than a leader–which would be Life Path 2 for sure.

    • Mary – I thoroughly reading about WHY you were born early, thank you for the link. Our son was born two weeks early. And while he fits the Life Path Number (3) of his early date of birth, his zodiac sign (Virgo) doesn’t suit him at all. He much better fits the sign (Libra) of the date he was supposed to have been born.

It’s interesting no matter how you slice it 🙂

  32. Hi Laurie,
I have gotten conflicting calculations when it comes to my life path number.
    I was born 2/8/1983, and was told I was a 22, but then also told I’m a 4.

Which is the correct way to calculate a life path number? Which number would I be?

    Thank you.

    • Delilah – You are a Master Number 22.

      2 + 8 + 1983 = 1993. Reduce the sum by adding it together: 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22. Please remember that ALL Master Numbers are additionally a Life Path Number. 11’s are Life Path 2.s. 22’s are Life Path 4’s. And 33’s are Life Path 6.

      • Hab vielen herzlichen Dank Laurie für meinen Lebensweg 2. Mein Leben ist schon weit fortgeschritten und deshalb kann ich vielem zustimmen… 🙂
Ich wünsche dir ein angenehmes frohes Wochenende. Ernst

Have many thanks Laurie for my second life My life is already far advanced and therefore I can agree with much … 🙂
I wish you a pleasant happy weekend.

  33. hi,,,,,could u tell me exactly how to calculate life path number? because when i calculated ( added ) my birthday it bring 22 but like you said when i follwed short way which brings 31. So here bit compliated. Oneway it bring to 22 which is master number but on the otherway it bring just 4.

      • Torbay –

        8 + 1 + 1975 = 1984. To reduce 1984, add the numbers together like this: 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 22.

        8 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 5 = 31. To reduce 31, add the numbers together like this: 3 + 1 = 4.

A Master Number (in your case, 22) always trumps a Life Path number. You are a Master Number 22.

But remember, all Master Numbers (11, 22, and 33) also have the attributes of their corresponding Life Path numbers:

Master number 11’s also have the attributes of Life Path 2’s
Master number 22’s also have the attributes of Life Path 4’s
Master number 33’s also have the attributes of Life Path 6’s

        Be inspired!

      • 08/01/1975

some people say it shou be counted as -> 0+8+0+1+1+9+7+5 = 31/4
Some people saly it shou be counted as -. 8+1+4 = 13/4
you say it should be calculated as -> 08
        01
        1975
        ———-
        1974 = 22/4

        ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  34. I have tried a few online calculators. They all tell me I am number 6. No one tells me I might also be master number 33.

    26.04.1974 (dd.mm.yyyy)

    2+6+0+4+1+9+7+4 = 33

    26 + 4 + 1974 = 2004 = 2 + 4 = 6

Does this make me a Masternumber 33/6

    With kind regards

    • FT – Here are my calculations for a person with a birth date of April 26, 1974:

      4 + 26 + 1974 = 2004.
      Reduce 2004 by adding the numbers together 2 + 0 + 0 + 4 = 6

Let’s do it again another way:

      4 + 2 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 4 = 33

All Master Numbers (11, 22, 33) trump Life Path numbers. According to my calculations, you are a Master Number 33. But remember ALL Master Numbers additionally have the characteristics of their corresponding Life Path Number:

Master Number 11 – also has Life Path 2 characteristics
Master Number 22 – also has Life Path 4 characteristics
Master Number 33 – also has Life Path 6 characteristics

  35. Thank you Laurie for your great site.
My life path is 6 or when I add each digit total is 33.
My husband is 13. 7. 1969. Both totals is 9 but he has an 11 in the process of adding up when digit by digit.
Would this mean he is 11 or 9? 🙂 Thank you!

    • Jodie – With a birth date of July 13, 1969, your husband is a wonderful Life Path 9 no matter how you slice it. Please understand that in Numerology it’s the final outcome (not what happens during the process) that matters. Here’s a link to detailed Life Path 9 information: http://wp.me/pP1C5-vX

  36. Hello! How to find out about compatibility of couples married using date of birth? My is 13.11.1985, husband’s 19.06.1982. Thank you.

  37. Oli — The Master 11 person has a natural fit with Life Paths 2, 4, and 8. They get along well with Life Paths 3 and 6. They’re neutral with Life Path 9’s. But they find a challenge (or need to compromise) with Life Paths 1, 5, and 7.

Your husband — a Life Path 9 person — has a natural fit with Life Paths 3, 6, and 9. They get along well with Life Paths 1 and 5. They’re neutral with Master Number 11, Life Paths 2 and 7. But they find a challenge (or need to compromise) with Life Paths 4 and 8.

    • Thank you very much, this is exactly what I was looking for.
Laurie Buchanan, tell me please where I can find the information about compatibility of other Life Paths numbers with yours description? Or maybe it’s from your own experience? I found the program vebest numerology in the Internet, thanks which you can learn some details about compatibility of different numbers. It can be useful for someone.

  38. My friend is a Life Path 1 because it was necessary to reduce twice: 1 + 9 = 10 to 1 + 0 =1. There is no listing for Life Path 1. What does this mean, according to your charted calculations? I’m curious, being a Life Path 2 according to the calculations you presented. As always, however, I retain the right to determine if these assessments ring true – or not – not being one to be led around by a ring in my nose…Numerology – This is a bit like calculating horoscopes, reading tarot cards, throwing runes, and/or calculating one’s sign/chart according to the Chinese calendar, etc.

    Interesting.

  39. Hi Laurie,
Thanks for this info. I am a 33/6 and my new friend a 9 which is how i ended up here at your site. Seeing if and how compatible we are and learning bout him. also I saw a note about “Master Numbers” which I fit into with the 33, however couldn’t find the article on it. Could you please let me know how to link up with it. Thanks Janette

  40. I did my life path number correctly and got 8. But i bare noooo resemblance whatsoever to it. But….7 explains everything, feels completely natural and right in every way. Is there an explanation for this?

    • Dana — I wonder if you were born early/late based on something like a c-section for instance (those types of births are usually scheduled “near” the time a child would have arrived on their own, but not necessarily the same day)…

  41. Hi !
i dont know how to calculate my life path number its confusing:) can you calculate it for me madam? mine is January 21 1992 . thnk you:)

  42. Hi Laurie. I hope you do not mind me asking.

    My son is born 23/01/2014

Is he a 13/4 life path. I read they are very rare, being only two years in the last century.

However, it’s quite troubling what I read about 13/4 .. Can you offer any guidance?

    • Airtelindiavoicemail – I have no idea what you’ve read that’s caused you to be troubled. People born on January 1, 2014 are indeed, Life Path 4 and let me assure you, I never met a Life Path 4 that I didn’t like.

  43. There is a lot of confusion regarding november month(11) considered to be left as it is.
However i beleive it must be further reduced to 2 as a mont cannot be a master number.
My birth date is 7 november 1995,
    Please clear off the doubt!
